There was a time when it looked like Channing Tatum was going to play X-Men character Gambit in his own solo movie. Originally set for release in 2016, that project was hit by countless creative problems and delays before the Disney/Fox merger sealed its fate and ended with the spin-off being scrapped.
Tatum has since shared his disappointment that he wasn't given the chance to play the fan-favourite mutant, but he may end up getting a second chance.
Scooper DanielRPK (via CBR) has shared a rumour claiming Ryan Reynolds is pushing for Tatum to be part of Deadpool 3. While it's unclear who he would play, it sounds like it might not necessarily be Gambit. As a result, the actor could join the MCU as a totally different character, leaving his Gambit hopes unfulfilled.
There are plenty of other great heroes and villains he can bring to life, though, so it might be worth passing on the Cajun mutant if it means getting to sink his teeth into another big role.
Talking about missing out on starring in Gambit, Tatum previously said he was left "traumatized" by the experience, adding that he, "shut off [his] Marvel machine" and was unable to watch any of the other Marvel movies. Why? Because "I loved that character. It was just too sad. It was like losing a friend because I was so ready to play him."
Very little is known about Deadpool 3, though it's thought Owen Wilson will reprise his Loki role as TVA agent Mobius alongside Reynolds' Merc with the Mouth and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. That points to this being a Multiversal adventure, explaining rumours we could see actors from 2005's Fantastic Four movie.
Hopefully, the trades will soon weigh in with some solid casting news about the upcoming threequel.
Deadpool 3 is set to be released in theaters on November 8, 2024.
