When it was announced that Hugh Jackman would be reprising the role of Wolverine for the third Deadpool movie, fans of the Aussie actor's take on the iconic X-Men hero were understandably excited, but there was also some concern that the events of James Mangold's much-loved Logan would be ignored.
This was certainly a possibility, especially if Marvel Studios planned to have Jackman stick around as Wolvie for more than one movie (we still don't know what's in the pipeline post Deadpool 3), but director Shawn Levy has now made it clear that his film will not discount or retcon anything that happens in Logan - including the title character's death.
“I have always said that I can’t wait for Deadpool 3 to come out because all I want to do is give interviews alongside Ryan where we talk about our reverence for the movie Logan,” Levy explained to BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast. “Logan is canon. We love Logan. That happened. I want the world to know, as the producer and director, all of us share a deep love and respect for Logan, every aspect of how it’s crafted, and all the events that take place.”
In a separate interview with The Wrap, Levy confirmed that "Deadpool 3" will not be the movie's final title.
“No, there’s no title yet. I sometimes refer to it as Deadpool vs Wolverine or Deadpool and Wolverine or Deadpool 3 With Wolvie — we’ve got a few titles we’ve been bandying about, but boy, it’s a tough one.”
While speaking to Jakes Takes, Levy also shared Jackman's reaction to the news that he'd be donning Wolverine's classic blue and yellow costume for the first time. In short, "f*ck yeah."
Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Karan Soni (Dopinder), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Rob Delaney (Peter), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead) And Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio) will all return as their respective characters, and they'll be joined by franchise newcomers Emma Corrin (The Crown), who is believed to be playing Cassandra Nova, and Matthew Macfadyen (Succession).
Specific lot details remain a mystery for now, but Wade and Wolvie are expected to find themselves (trapped?) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A recent report claimed that Loki's TVA, including Agent Mobius (Owen Wilson) and Miss Minutes, will be involved. We have also been led to believe that Wade's MCU debut will be far more integral to Phase 5 and beyond than we first realized.
Deadpool 3 was scheduled to hit theaters on May 3, 2024, but the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike will likely cause a delay. Though nothing has been made official, the trades believe the film will be pushed back to July.
