DEADPOOL 3 Director Shawn Levy Teases "Iconic" Wolverine & Merc With A Mouth Team-Up

Though he mostly remained tight-lipped when it comes to Hugh Jackman's return as Wolverine, Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy did tease an "iconic" team-up between Logan and Wade Wilson...

Though the buzz has understandably died down a little since the initial announcement back in September, fans remain very curious about Hugh Jackman's return as Wolverine for the third Deadpool movie, which will also mark the Merc With a Mouth's MCU debut.

Jackman and Ryan Reynolds have hinted at a few things here and there, and from what we can gather, Logan is going to have a substantial role in the threequel.

During an interview with SyFy.com, director Shawn Levy was asked what he could disclose about the movie and Jackman's reprisal after seemingly retiring from the role after James Mangold's Logan. While he declined to reveal very much (anything at all, to be honest) about the plot, Levy did tease an exciting team-up between "the ultimate Marvel icon and the ultimate Marvel iconoclast."

"I can’t say much," he admitted. "Thank God, Stranger Things has trained me to shut my mouth more than is instinctive for me. I’ll just say that to be developing and prepping this movie that has this iconic duo together in an entire movie for the first time — a pairing between Hugh and Ryan, Wolverine and Deadpool. [It's] very much a pairing that the world has waited for for over a decade, [and] I’m the lucky son of a b**** who gets to tell a story about that pair."

"The potential is so rich and every day that we work on the screenplay, there are ideas that we didn’t anticipate that appear because you’re talking about the ultimate Marvel icon and the ultimate Marvel iconoclast."

We have no idea how Logan will factor into the story (there are rumors that the TVA from Loki will be involved), but there's plenty of comic book material to draw inspiration from. Reynolds has previously revealed that his original pitch for a third Deadpool film focused on a road trip with Wade and Wolvie, so perhaps elements of that idea carried over?

Jackman's involvement also raises the question: is his take on Wolverine joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe along with Deadpool? We can't imagine the actor has committed to more than one additional appearance, but who knows?

All will be revealed when Deadpool 3 hits theaters on September 6, 2024.

@bobevanz - I'd say it be black and grey ala X-force. They're saving the classic look for the reboot.

"is his take on Wolverine joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe along with Deadpool?"

I'd wager it's a one and done. His involvement in an MCU proper film leads me to believe that Jackman IS the MCU's Logan, but I kinda hope he doesn't stick around. Use DP3 to introduce the idea of Wolverine to the MCU, but they should end with him being shuffled off to the Fox-Men/Logan continuity and then bring back Dafne Keen as X-23 in a post-credit scene.

I'm hoping this movie is going to be great. Not really much of a fan of the past films Levy has directed.

So pumped for this. The addition of Jackman’s Wolverine has this surpassing my excitement for any other film in the next few years by a wide margin… unless they confirm that Hugh is also in Kang Dynasty and/or Secret Wars… then it’s just off the charts! This was a huge W by Feige.

You know, this could be where Marvel actually introduces their new MCU Wolverine. I mean, it makes sense. If DP and Wolvie actually do go through a multiversal roadtrip, it could include (and likely would) them encountering multiple versions of themselves along the way (i.e. Lady Deadpool (or pretty much any Marvel character+"pool"), Old Man Logan, the new Wolverine, etc.). I mean there was that DP universe glimpsed in "DS:MoM" (I think, or that could have been a cut scene). This movie could end with our DP in the MCU along with one of those Wolvie variants who ends up being the MCU Wolverine while Jackman is left in the Fox universe. Hell, they could even kill off that universe properly with an incursion, but they might be saving that for "A:SW".

But that does bring me to an interesting point that I don't think has been really addressed (or maybe I just missed it): I know a lot of the criticism of "DS:MoM" was that it wasn't MoM enough. But I think that originally it was planned to be crazier, but as their "Multiverse Saga" plans started to solidify they ended up dialing it back (probably at least part of the reason for all the reshoots). Why? Because they just didn't want to blow their "multiversal wad" too early (something we can all relate to, amiright guys? Guys?). It makes sense that they would want to build up to it, not have the MCU go from normal to multiversal craziness in the matter of 2 movies and a TV show. So "Loki" introduced to concept and triggered the recreation of the Multiverse, then "SM:NWH" showed how that could now be tapped into from an earth-based perspective (which opens the door a little wider), then MoM showed how it could be abused, albeit on a smaller scale, "AM:QM" will introduce us to the ones who will REALLY abuse it on a large scale, then "A:KD" will show us that full-scale multiversal abuse, and "A:SW" will take off from there with the repercussions of all that (i.e. Battleworld, all the incursions and variants, etc.).

So with all that in mind, it makes sense to me why they didn't make MoM as crazy as people were expecting. Maybe they should have named it "Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Huh, That's Pretty Cool, Look it's the Illuminati - Oh, No, Wait, They're All Dead Now".

end scene with Jackmans wolverine (who has been trying to get home for the entire movie) given the opportunity to do so but Wade gives him some big speach about friendship and hows he has now found his real place, a place where he deserves to be. inspiring music in the back ground, Logan showing that he's taking in what Wade says. only for the music to stop, Logan to tell Wade to "go F himself" and then go back home anyway. one and done then for Jackman.
