There was a time when it looked like Channing Tatum was going to play X-Men character Gambit in his own solo movie. Originally set for release in 2016, the project was hit by countless creative issues and delays before the Disney/Fox merger sealed its fate when the spin-off, along with several other projects, was scrapped.
Tatum has since shared his disappointment that he wasn't given the chance to take on the role of the fan-favourite mutant, but may end up getting a second chance.
This isn't the first time we've heard the rumour, but it's once again being reported - by reliable insider @mytimetoshineh1 - that Tatum has shot a cameo appearance in Marvel Studios' Deadpool 3.
Taylor Kitsch previously played the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but a splashy cameo from Tatum would be a fun way to give him a long-overdue chance to play the Cajun hero...and take full advantage of the potential Marvel's Multiverse has.
Talking about missing out on starring in Gambit, Tatum previously said he was left "traumatized" by the experience, adding that he, "shut off [his] Marvel machine" and was unable to watch any of the other Marvel movies. Why? Because "I loved that character. It was just too sad. It was like losing a friend because I was so ready to play him."
It's also been reported Ben Affleck has filmed a cameo as Daredevil, suggesting we'll see a lot of references to 20th Century Fox's Marvel movies before saying a final farewell to that reality. After all, if Deadpool 3 doesn't end with the Merc with the Mouth stranded in the MCU, what's the point?
Alongside Ryan Reynolds and Wolverine, Deadpool franchise vets Karan Soni (Dopinder), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Stefan Kapicic (Colossus), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio), and Rob Delaney (Peter) are all also set to return.
Emma Corrin has also signed up as a mystery character, while we also recently learned that Matthew Macfadyen will likely play a TVA agent named Paradox in the movie.
Deadpool 3 is set to be released in theaters on May 3, 2024.
