Disney Said To Be "Unimpressed" With NEW MUTANTS; DEADPOOL May Alternate Between R & PG-13

We recently found out that Disney plans to ditch an entire slate of 20th Century Fox movies, and it's now been revealed that House of Mouse doesn't think very highly of Josh Boone's The New Mutants...

On the heels of the very public dressing down 20th Century Fox received from Disney's Bob Iger after the first-quarter numbers came in last week, it sounds like there might be more trouble ahead for the already struggling studio.

According to Variety, Disney is largely unimpressed with John Boone's upcoming X-Men spinoff The New Mutants, and believes it has "limited box office potential." The film is currently set for an April 2020 theatrical release, but, as far as we know, still requires some reshoots. If this report is accurate, it doesn't sound like Fox's new corporate parent is going to have much interest in forking out for any additional photography!

As for Deadpool, Disney is still said to be "grappling" with how to integrate The Merc With a Mouth into the MCU, and is trying to find a way for the character to "move seamlessly between Avengers spinoffs and bloody, profane stand-alone adventures."

That certainly sounds like we could end up getting the best of both worlds, with a toned down Wade Wilson joining Earth's Mightiest Heroes, while the hard-R Merc we know and love continues to slice 'n dice his way through his own solo movies.

Eh, don't much care for New Mutants, but the quote in that article about Taika Waititi's new film is so supremely dumb:
The scathing takedown of Nazism may, however, prove a little too edgy for Disney brass accustomed to producing movies suitable for parents and kids. Searchlight has started to screen the film for its new parent company. Halfway through one recent viewing one executive grew audibly uncomfortable, worrying aloud that the material would alienate Disney fans. His unease may have been over the film’s cutting-edge satire, but it was also an expression of the culture clash taking place as the two studios embark on their new union

I know Hollywood execs say dumb shit all the time, but if your biggest concern over a Hitler satire was that it would "alienate Disney fans", then I think you bought the wrong company.

@tmp3 - Weird. That’s like the whole point of a different banner. Everyone will see Fox Searchlight in front of the movie and not Disney.

@TheUnworthyThor - Disney is just gonna use Fox as an IP incubator in a few years I think, with most of Fox Searchlight's output going straight to streaming or something.

@tmp3 - Isn't there this conspiracy that Walt Disney was a big-time anti-semite and there is like Nazism scattered throughout early Disney productions???

Oh was that a fever dream of mine....

@Hawknaba - There is a lot of debate over that, but that's a long discussion that probably needs a lot more nuance than I'm willing to give right now

@Hawknaba - That was a long time rumor that was mostly debunked from what I've read. Although...

I hope for Anya Taylor Joy's sake this movie never comes out though. Really, really like her.

@tmp3 - Me too. She's pretty much the only reason I want to see it.

First time I read something quoting Disney ghat related to “limited box office potential”, it usually is better worded than that.

I really dig the cast of New Mutants, but I have lost any short of interest I had in it; although I would be more keen on watching that than Dark Phoenix.
I have faith in the Marvel Studios team on handling Deadpool.

Well with Deadpool you just make him self-aware on where he is if he's working among the Avengers. Just make a joke saying something like he's trying to be on his best behaviour and jab at Disney. And replace curses with things like "fudge nuggets." Then when he's on his solo stuff he can make jabs at letting loose again. Easy.
