Will 2023 go down as one of the worst years in history for Marvel and DC movies? Thinking back to the early 2000s, probably not, but it's still been a hit-and-miss 12 months for the superhero genre.
There have been some critical and commercial hits like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Loki season 2; unfortunately, the many disappointments - Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom just became the latest DCEU disaster - have overshadowed them and led to talk of "superhero fatigue."
While this genre still has plenty of life left in it, 2024 is going to be a big test. We have only one MCU movie on the way, and a single "Elseworlds" DC title. Oh, and three of Sony's typically terrible Marvel movies in a year when this genre could do without another series of flops. Perhaps Venom 3 can save the day?
Still, there's a fair bit to look forward to on the small screen - DCU title Creature Commandos and X-Men: The Animated Series follow-up X-Men '97, for example - and we recently asked you to cast your votes and pick the 2024 movies and TV shows you're most excited about.
Today, the results are in...
Deadpool 3 - 64.92%
Joker: Folie à Deux - 13.31%
X-Men '97 - 5.78%
The Penguin - 4.84%
Echo - 2.02%
Agatha: Darkhold Diaries - 1.75%
Creature Commandos - 1.61%
Kraven the Hunter - 1.21%
Superman & Lois Season 4 - 1.21%
Madame Web - 1.08%
Venom 3 - 0.94%
Marvel Zombies - 0.94%
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man - 0.4%
Deadpool 3 is the clear winner, no great surprise considering the fact it's a) an MCU movie and b) a Multiversal blockbuster that's bound to be filled with fan-pleasing cameos. Joker: Folie à Deux may be a distant second, but that's a good result for the brand after what the DCEU delivered in 2023.
X-Men '97 is your most anticipated TV show, though The Penguin (which spins out of the events of The Batman) wasn't too far behind.
We're a little surprised to see Marvel Zombies and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man at the bottom of this list. However, it's been a long time since they were revealed at Comic-Con in 2022 and Marvel Animation doesn't seem to have massive drawing power, even after What If...? season 2 debuted to glowing reviews.
Kraven the Hunter, meanwhile, managed to beat Madame Web and Venom 3 as your most anticipated Sony Marvel release.
