BOX OFFICE: MALEFICENT Takes The Top Spot From X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

After a very impressive Memorial Day weekend debut, X-Men: Days of Future Past proved to be no match for the House of Mouse as Maleficent has taken the North American box office by storm.

Despite an incredible opening last week, X-Men: Days of Future Past will fall to second place this weekend in North America with an estimated $32 million three day total after taking $9.6 million on Friday. It's been beaten by Disney's Maleficent, the live-action Sleeping Beauty prequel which stars Angelina Jolie. That earned $24.2 million when it opened yesterday, and now looks set for a $70+ million by the end of tomorrow. $65 million is a more conservative estimate, but that's still a great debut, especially as it has already taken over $20 million overseas. Another notable new arrival this week is Seth MacFarlane's A Million Ways to Die in the West, the R-Rated comedy set in the old West. That looks set to open in third, and with a projected $16 million, that's a pretty massive drop when compared to Ted's debut. What are you guys watching this weekend?

Maleficent looks BAD which doesn't surprise me because it's based from Sleeping Beauty

Holy Shit! That's a huge drop:o Movie open huge and had great critical reception, what happened? I thought Malificent was good. I think Fox should move Apocalypse's release date. It's scheduled to open head to head with Alice in Wonderland 2. These Disney films are successful most of the time. Damn! Didn't expect this.

X-Men AND Spider-Man couldn't last two weeks at number 1? That sucks. I hope TMNT doesn't steal GOTG's thunder in August...

What percent drop is that and how does it stack up with X-Franchise averages? I'm too lazy to do the math right now.

Was expecting Maleficent to take the top spot, wasn't expecting that huge drop for DOFP though. 65%? Ouch.

Yeah, seeing two big CBM's in a row get stomped in their second weekends... looks even more like Marvel chose Cap's release date very wisely. Hopefully GOTG fares as well.

May of 2016 is going to be PACKED!!!

May 6th-BvS:DoJ (Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice)
May 6th-CA3 (Captain America: Rebirth?)
May 27-XM:A (X-Men: Apocalypse)
May 27-AiW2 (Alice in Wonderland 2)

X-Men or Alice will suffer the most unless Fox pulls a MCU move and have it release in April. :(

June...

June 10th-TASM3 (The Amazing Spider-Man 3)
June 17th-(Finding Dory)<--- Knock out punch to TASM3
June 17th-HTRYD3(How to Train Your Dragon 3)

~90M to 32M is stiff. Maybe, similar to the other X-Men movies, the people that really wanted to see it all saw it opening weekend, though maybe the 4-day weekend factored into that.

Friday to Friday, that's a 73.5% drop. I know it's no longer Memorial day, but that's not the kind of number you want to see.
