Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, theaters have been shut down indefinitely, which has forced a number of top studios, including Walt Disney Studios, Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, and Warner Bros. Pictures, to push back some of their biggest films from this summer to either later this year or into the next.
While it remains to be seen exactly when theaters will be able to reopen safely across the globe, Disney has optimistically shared their updated theatrical release calendar for 2020, and it looks like they find themselves in quite a unique predicament as they are currently positioned to open a new title almost every week for the rest of the year.
Out of the nineteen remaining weekends remaining in the year, starting with Mulan on July 24, the House of Mouse is slated to open new films from Walt Disney Pictures, 20th Century Studios, Searchlight Pictures, Disney/Pixar and Marvel Studios on fourteen of those weekends.
There have been some rumblings that films currently set for July/August will also be forced to move back, but for now, it looks like Disney is counting on at least some level of normalcy returning before Labor Day.
