Disney Is Slated To Open A New Film Pretty Much Every Week For The Rest Of The Year Once Theaters Reopen

While it remains to be seen exactly when theaters will reopen, Disney's updated release calendar suggests they are gearing up to debut a new film pretty much every week for the rest of the year.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, theaters have been shut down indefinitely, which has forced a number of top studios, including Walt Disney Studios, Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, and Warner Bros. Pictures, to push back some of their biggest films from this summer to either later this year or into the next.

While it remains to be seen exactly when theaters will be able to reopen safely across the globe, Disney has optimistically shared their updated theatrical release calendar for 2020, and it looks like they find themselves in quite a unique predicament as they are currently positioned to open a new title almost every week for the rest of the year.

Out of the nineteen remaining weekends remaining in the year, starting with Mulan on July 24, the House of Mouse is slated to open new films from Walt Disney Pictures, 20th Century Studios, Searchlight Pictures, Disney/Pixar and Marvel Studios on fourteen of those weekends.

There have been some rumblings that films currently set for July/August will also be forced to move back, but for now, it looks like Disney is counting on at least some level of normalcy returning before Labor Day.

  • 07/24/20 – MULAN (Walt Disney Pictures)
  • 08/07/20 – EMPTY MAN (20th Century Studios)
  • 08/14/20 – THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN (Walt Disney Pictures)

  • 10/16/20 – THE FRENCH DISPATCH (Searchlight Pictures)
  • 10/23/20 – EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT JAMIE (20th Century Studios)
  • 11/06/20 – BLACK WIDOW (Marvel Studios/Disney)
  • 11/13/20 – DEEP WATER (20th Century Studios)
  • 11/20/20 – SOUL (Disney·Pixar)
  • 12/11/20 – FREE GUY (20th Century Studios)
  • 12/18/20 – WEST SIDE STORY (20th Century Studios)

Outside my obvious desire to see Black Widow I also really want to see The King's Man and Death on the Nile after having watched their predecessors recently.

Black Widow is the only thing I care about there.

Maybe Soul if I'm feeling generous.

I didn't like Murder on the Orient Express when I first watched it (mostly for its resolution and probably due to being in a bad mood), but I watched it again recently and sort of loved it. Kind of hyped for Death on the Nile as a result.

But when you're packing the theaters to the gills with releases, it does seem like some of those movies should be going to streaming to keep from cannibalizing. (All of this assumes people will want or be able to pack themselves into theaters like they used to after learning all these new anti-pandemic habits.)

Out of that list I only want to see Black Widow.
