Disney's BAMBI Live-Action Remake May Be Shelved After Losing Director Sarah Polley

It seems Disney's planned live-action remake of beloved animated classic, Bambi, may no longer be moving forward after losing director Sarah Polley

Disney has been working its way through its entire back-catalogue of beloved animated movies over the past few years, and we found out last summer that Bambi would be the latest classic to get the live-action remake treatment, with Sarah Polley (Women Talking) on board as director.

However, the project has now suffered a major setback, and could end up being shelved indefinitely or maybe even cancelled altogether.

According to several well-placed sources (since confirmed by The Wrap), Polley has parted ways with the movie. We're not certain why, but the recent Hollywood strikes are believed to have factored into the filmmaker's decision to step away after production delays resulted in a scheduling conflict.

Another director may well be brought on to replace her, but insiders believe there's a chance Bambi will not move forward at all.

A Bambi movie was planned back in 2020 with, Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsey Beer set to pen the script, but we're not sure if they had stayed on this latest version or new scribes were enlisted to work on a separate take on the story.

A brief synopsis was released back when the movie was first announced: "The coming-of-age story of Bambi, the young deer struck by tragedy who counts amongst his woodland pals the rabbit Thumper and a skunk named Flower."

The '40s original was the fifth animated film to be released by the studio, and famously (or infamously, if you happen to be one of the kids left traumatized) includes the heartbreaking death of Bambi's mother at the hands of a deer hunter. The movie actually received mixed reviews when it was first released, but has gained a much larger fan-base over the years.

What do you make of this news? Are you disappointed that Polley has left the movie, or were you not looking forward to a live-action take on Bambi in the first place? Drop us a comment down below.

"In this Disney classic, a young deer named Bambi joins his new friends, a rabbit named Thumper and a skunk named Flower, in exploring his forest home. As a boy, he learns from his doting mother and his father, The Great Prince of the Forest, that there are dangers in the open meadows where hunters can spot the animals, and he meets a beautiful young doe named Faline. As Bambi grows up, he learns that there is tragedy as well as beauty and joy in his forest world and on the path to adulthood."

Good. They'd probably make Bambi a black lesbian.

@Slotherin - yes, because disney never just changes race, gender, and make people gay for no reason 🙄

@Origame - What I think’s funny, is the Bambi story could have room for gay coupling; but Disney being Disney, would F it up anyway 😅

Bambi has strong themes of puberty, and changing personalities as you partner up, start families, etc. Heck, the dang skunk was always gender-questionable when I was kid, I remember asking my mom if the Skunk was a boy or girl. So, it makes sense to add elements of being gay in This story.

But Disney is so out of touch, and being run by algorithms. They can’t make a creative decision to save their life (or bottom line).

Kind of like how Ursula is the one dang character that it makes sense to cast as a drag queen, because the actual character is based off a queen - naaah let’s make the Pinocchio Fairy the drag queen.

For all the crap shot for shot remakes get, the best live adaptations have been Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, and to a lesser extent Aladdin and Lion King. Why? Bc they stuck closely to the originals.

The remakes that made substantial divergences like Little Mermaid and Cinderella are the least liked.

I get the argument that why make a shot for shot remake when we already know how it plays out, but it’s the same appeal Comic Book Movies have. Seeing animated favorites come to life.

If they make a Sword in the Stone or any other classic, they should stick to the original as much as possible.

Just look at the disaster Snow White is turning into.

@MuadDib - except the comic book movies tell different stories than the comics, so we don't exactly know how it plays out.

But yeah, they get criticized for doing 1-on-1 remakes and can't seem to get diverging from the source material right either. Might be a sign just to stop altogether.

We know they won't though, and so I hope they just keep trying to tell new stories. Same with Sword in the Stone

This was always an odd fit to begin wi5h. I just don't see how Polley would have been able to keep her vision of the film while also working within the Disney system.

@Slotherin - oh yeah, I definitely agree. Disney is not gonna leave remaking alone though, so I rather see them use the medium to remake movies to reach a wider audience than they originally did.

I didn’t even know this film had a director honestly and a Oscar Winning one at that…

Not familiar with Sarah Polley’s work but given her filmography , her feature work seems to be emotional human dramas which could have worked with Bambi given the events of the story tbh.

However , I would be fine if this does get shelved since they were going the photorealistic route ala Favreau’s The Lion King which i didn’t care much for personally (it would look beautiful but with that style , it’s hard to capture anthropomorphic emotions imo).

If they are going to do the live action remakes (which have been a mixed bag imo out of the ones I’ve seen). I would hope they would do ones for lesser known or appreciated movies such as Atlantis or Treasure Planet.

Anyway , the only one I’m interested in right now is Hercules so i hope we get an update on that soon.

bkmeijer1 - 3/10/2024, 4:41 AM
@TheVisionary25 - we know they're gonna keep doing them, so I too wanna see them remake the movies that didn't initially reached a wider audience.

Live-action movies are a solid medium to do so, and they do have classics like Atlantis and Treasure Planet, but also with Black Cauldron and the recently cancelled Sword in the Stone.
