Variety is reporting that Emily Blunt has signed on to star opposite Dwayne Johnson (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) in Disney's Jungle Cruise, which is slated to be the first live-action film loosely based on the Walt Disney World ride of the same name.

Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows) is directing the adventure feature with a script from Academy Award-nominee Michael Green (Logan), who recently completed rewriting a screenplay from the writing duo of J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.

Production is slated to begin in May, which means this will likely be Blunt's only major project this year before she begins work on the Edge of Tomorrow sequel with Tom Cruise. A production start date has yet-to-be-confirmed for the hotly anticipated follow-up, but it's been heavily rumored to commence work at the tail-end of this year, if not, early 2019 as both stars and director Doug Liman have recently cleared out their schedules for the lengthy shoot.

As for the rest of Blunt's year, she currently has three films set to release with the animated Sherlock Gnomes arriving in theaters in March, then the John Krasinski-helmed horror A Quiet Place in April, and finally, the long-awaited Mary Poppins Returns on Christmas Day.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Idk why the editor said it's the first live action Disney film based on a ride when.....

@Antithesis - Some actors and actresses like to do fun projects also and not always films shooting for all the awards and accolades. Anthony Hopkins comes to mind because he did Silence of the Lambs and was hilarious in Thor: Ragnarok.

Emily Blunt is great, hopefully she and the Rock can put out a great, enjoyable film.

Am I the only one that Jumanji was one of the worst movies of the year? I dont understand what audiences and critics see in that movie. It made me cringe more than a few times.

@azureus - It may just be different taste in humor. I thought it was funny, adventurous and had a lot of heart.

Every time Blunt is in a headline, I dread that she's been cast in a role I care about.

Luckily, she never has been. But one day I fear my luck will run out.

I wish Emily Blunt had been Black Widow.

@TheManWithoutFear - I'm glad she wasn't. Scarlett is perfect. Marvel also offered her the Peggy Carter role but luckily she passed on it because Krazinski lost out on the Cap role (and thank Jeebus for that!).

@TheManWithoutFear - I think Emily might have been able to pull off the Russian accent which would have been nice. Scarlett tried it for a couple lines and then thought "eh,nah."

"which is slated to be the first live-action film loosely based on the Walt Disney World ride of the same name."

Uhhhh.... Forgetting Pirates of the Caribbean? There's also Tomorrowland, which is based on an entire section of their Magic Kingdom park.

I really wish Disney would quit making movies based on their rides. The rides then receive dozens of updates to make them match the movies. This has greatly decreased the quality of the Pirates ride, which has a bad Jack Sparrow animatronic shoehorned into almost every scene.

Pirates was originally just a fun ride where you got to see Pirates acting rambunctious. Now it is supposed to be another Jack Sparrow story. Similarly, Jungle Cruise was supposed to be a fun adventure ride where you explore a Jungle and encounter animals and natives. It will inevitably have Dwayne Johnson animatronics all over the place and a terrible and hastily-crafted storyline to match what is already there.

I suppose it bugs me so badly because the rides become less about the individual's personal experience and adventure on the ride, and more about witnessing or being a part of someone else's adventure. It kind of sucks the imagination and engagement out of the experience.
