We're not sure how many people will have even the slightest interest in this, but a prequel to the 2019 live-action remake of The Lion King is on the way, and Disney has now released an official promo still.

The image gives us a look at Simba's beloved father, Mufasa, as a cub.

The movie is directed by Moonlight filmmaker Barry Jenkins, and features Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as younger versions of Mufasa and his brother Scar, taking over from James Earl Jones as Mufasa in both the 1994 animated original and the remake, and Jeremy Irons and Chiwetel Ejiofor as the villainous Scar.

A brief teaser for the movie screened during the D23 Expo back in 2022, and the footage showed Rafiki (John Kani) telling the story of Mufasa's early life to a group of young cubs, revealing that the lion who would be king was actually an orphan who had to navigate the world alone until he found his way to becoming the monarch of Pride Rock.

“In this place a lion was born without a drop of nobility in his blood,” Rafiki narrates. “The lion who would change our lives forever.”

The teaser also included some dialogue from Billy Eichner’s Timon: “Wait wait wait, am I not in this story? I don’t feel seen.”

"I had to make this movie," said Jenkins back when the project was first announced. "Because when I was 14 I was raising two nephews and there was a VHS tape that we watched about 95 times in the span of two days. I was thinking about Mufasa and how he becomes great… I am not a king, I am not a king… Mufasa is great because of the family and friends he has with him."

Although the 2019 remake was a pretty big hit at the box office, it wasn't particularly well-received by critics, and sits at 53% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Check out the image below, and let us know what you think.

"Mufasa: The Lion King is an upcoming American musical drama film directed by Barry Jenkins, written by Jeff Nathanson, and produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Pastel Productions. It is intended to be the live-action styled photorealistic computer-generated imagery prequel to the similarly created 2019 remake of the original film The Lion King.

The prequel is about the rise of one of the greatest kings of the Pride Lands, goes back to the African savanna where Rafiki tells Kiara—daughter of Simba and Nala—the story of her grandfather while Timon and Pumbaa add color commentary."

Billy eichner is quickly becoming one of my most hated in Hollywood. His speech at the end of Bros was so pretentious. And of course when the movie bombed he blamed straight white men.

@Origame - I remember him coming into Parks and Rec in the later seasons and he was immediately the most annoying character on the show. I haven’t seen him in anything since and can’t imagine I’d ever want to support him in anything. Such an obnoxious no-talent hack.

@mountainman - honestly I don't even mind him being no talent. It's just like "yeah whatever" and I'll stop watching what he's in. Even alaqua cox I blame more on the people who hired her rather than her because she's just an Amazon worker who obviously wanted to be in a show.

But what takes me over the edge is the attitude. That he deserves respect, admiration, and box office money. And if he doesn't get any of it it must mean we're being bigots. It's like he took the south park Kathleen Kennedy parody and viewed her as a role model.

@Origame - I remember how he blamed the audience for not wanting to see Bros.

I can’t imagine any industry besides Hollywood or the Government where the “customers” are blamed like this. Any other business would pivot their product offering to appeal to customers rather than trying to insult the customers for not liking what they offer.

@mountainman - closest thing I can think of is when Gillette made that anti male ad and got backlash from it. But even then, they just silently swept it under the rug and moved on.

I really don't get why this is so hard for Hollywood to grasp. People don't like your products. Just deal with it and make something they like. But they'd rather let the entire film industry burn than imply they were wrong.

Even now, marvel is claiming they're learning from their mistakes by fixing daredevil, cap 4, and the marvels, but then just announce to anyone tired of the m-she-u that they're bringing in a female silver surfer.

@Origame - Gillette had to pivot and hasn’t run an ad like that since then.

Same with Budweiser. They’ve pivoted big time after their 30% stock drop. Signed a new UFC contract and their head spokesperson is Shane Gillis now.

If Hollywood pivoted, they’d be good. Even Disney pivoted I bet they could win back most disillusioned fans. So far so good with X-Men 97, but they need some consistency with this stuff to get the benefit of the doubt back.

The funniest thing about the female Silver Surfer thing yesterday, were the two most common defenses for it were:

1) It could just be a variant
2) Maybe this female silver surfer dies and Norin Radd comes in

Problems with both approaches:

1) The audience has variant overload. Also this makes the female version pointless and certain people will complain
2) So we are really fridging this female Silver Surfer? After how bad fridging is seen by so many people?

I like the premise and an Oscar nominated director in Barry Jenkins at the helm makes me hopeful…

However , I didn’t care for the 2019 Lion King due to the photo-realistic nature of it (as impressive of a technical & visual achievement it was).

Due to the animals being presented in that manner , there was a lack of animated energy to the expressions that made it hard to connect with the characters and thus the heart wasn’t really there either.

Hopefully this turns out better then that did.

My daughter just got into the lion king this year so I’m sure we’ll be seeing this in theaters. I think I’d be more stoked if it was animated but we’ll see.

I found it interesting my daughter chose the newer version over the old one though she adores both.

I didn't hate the remake, it just seemed like such an odd decision to make the animals photorealistic and then have them sing and emote... without emoting. It should have been more like the Jungle Book.

I haven't taken the time to watch the remake, I might when my kids are older right now they'd rather watch the original.

I did forget this was being made. I understand this is being made because the first did make a lot of money but that was more based on nostalgia for the originals. Still, I don't foresee this being remotely as profitable and I have less interest for it than the remake.

If it ends up good I may check it out
