BOX OFFICE: New ROGUE ONE Opening Weekend Estimates; DOCTOR STRANGE Passes THOR: THE DARK WORLD Globally
Now that Rogue One reviews are in, we have some updated estimates for the new Star Wars flick's opening weekend. Plus, Marvel's latest has now become the studio's seventh highest-grossing movie.
Along with the first reviews for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (you can check out mine HERE), we have some updated box office estimates courtesy of Variety.
Our last report indicated that the Gareth Edwards-directed movie could take in between $280 and $350 million worldwide over the course of its first weekend in theaters, but these new numbers are a tad more conservative, placing the prequel in and around the $120-150 million domestic/$250-300 global mark - which of course is still very impressive, if not anything close to The Force Awakens' massive haul.
In addition, Doctor Strange has now passed Thor: The Dark World to become Marvel's seventh highest-grossing movie to date. We recently reported that the Scott Derrickson-helmed adventure had officially become the studio's most profitable character launch, but now that it's taken in a total of $647 million after less than 2 months on release, The Sorcerer Supreme's big-screen debut has the potential to break even more records.
