Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may have struggled to live up to the lofty expectations of many fans, but the sequel was still an important chapter in the Multiverse Saga.
As well as taking the former Sorcerer Supreme on a trip through a number of alternate realities, it finished by introducing the idea of incursions. Comic book fans will know those occur when two realities collide, with both of them ultimately destroyed.
In what felt like a rather hastily put together post-credits scene, Clea arrived on Earth-616 to seek Strange's help in stopping an incursion he had caused. Now, The Cosmic Circus claims Doctor Strange 3 will pick up on that by adapting elements of Marvel Comics' "Time Runs Out" storyline.
The MCU threequel is expected to begin where Multiverse of Madness ended with Strange enlisted by a group called The Black Priests. Clea is a member of the multiversal organisation and their HQ will be "in the Nothing Space of Destroyed Universes, which exists within the space of two dead universes caused by an incursion."
From there, we'll learn that the Multiverse is dying as a result of incursions (most of which we'd bet on being caused by Kang the Conqueror and his many Variants). The threequel would also better explore the supposed threat Strange poses to the wider Multiverse.
The site notes that Doctor Strange 3 is expected to set the stage for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, no great surprise when "Time Runs Out" ended with Earth-616 and Earth-1610 moments from colliding. From there, Doctor Doom would create a new Battleworld reality.
It's worth noting that a lot could have changed since the WGA strike began and we'd be remiss not to remind you of Disney CEO Bob Iger's comments in which he suggested MCU characters don't necessarily need third or fourth movies after Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania underperformed.
Doctor Strange 3 doesn't currently have a release date.
