ETERNALS Director Chloé Zhao Reveals The Movie's Original, Incredibly Bleak Ending - SPOILERS

Eternals director Chloé Zhao has revealed that the Marvel Studios movie originally had a much different ending, though it certainly wasn't a happy one! Find the full spoilery details after the jump...

Eternals was released to mixed reviews earlier this year, and by the time the credits rolled, the stage had been set for the characters to return in a big way down the line. Sprite remained on Earth, Thena, Druig, and Makkari departed on the Domo to find other Eternals, and Sersi, Phastos, and Kingo were taken by Arishem to be judged for their role in stopping the Emergence.

It was a major cliffhanger, and one that set the stage for a number of future stories featuring the immortal heroes. However, director Chloé Zhao has now revealed that she originally had a far bleaker conclusion in mind.

"I have never made a film where the ending is what I wrote! You find it in the edit. Editing is a third of the filmmaking process, and when you show it to people, that's when you find the ending," the filmmaker recently explained to Empire Online. "I don't think I've made a single film where the opening and ending stay the same as the script, just because the scenes are fluid as we shoot. And we actually had another ending that is really bleak. Bleak. I didn't hate it, because I'm used to films that are more melancholy. But I don't think it went down well with audiences."

"It used to end with everybody back on the ship, minds erased and just going on to another planet, like The Twilight Zone," she continued. "I remember when it goes to black, everyone was like, 'I don't know what to do.' And also, it's the MCU, and you want to be excited for what's next."

Had Eternals been a one-off, then this could have worked, but it's hard to imagine this ending getting fans excited about the future in any way, shape, or form. The door would be open to seeing the characters again, of course, but probably not in any sort of meaningful way based on what's outlined here.

The filmmaker doesn't reveal whether this was ever actually shot, but we know an alternate ending isn't going to be included as a "deleted scene" on the Blu-ray when it's released this February.

Do you think this was the better ending for Eternals?

This movie was so unlike marvel. And they wanted to make it even bleaker? Really had their finger on the pulse

@TheWalkingCuban - I liked it.

It was a nice philosophical departure from the norm but not in a condescending way

@SauronthePower - I like it, but I also see it is a low point for the marvel consensus, for the critical consensus, and for the box office seeing as it did not reach the incredible hulk’s inflation adjusted domestic. But like I said, I liked it. My daughter also liked it, but being a teenager and getting online, she has already changed her mind. Well that’s too bad, I still have the memory of sitting next to her and her liking the movie and so you couldn’t change my mind about it if you tried. Even though I fell asleep from the battle in England to the forest battle. Peoples moods affect mine I won’t even lie, When I watched Captain Marvel it was with a group of friends, but I sat next to the one that did not like it and I didn’t like it either and yet I liked it on Blu-ray with my family, same thing happened with no way home, first time I watched it I sat next to a lady with a broken foot, she never laughed. Second time I watched it with my kids, and so it is in my top three for marvel. It wasn’t on that first viewing though LOL. But I definitely understand that making the movie bleaker would not be crowdpleasing, in general.

@TheWalkingCuban - That is interesting. Maybe I need to come on here and listen to people saying things like "in Feige we trust" while watching them and I might like them, instead of watching Nerdrotic reviews on YouTube turning me into a hater. Or better still not watch at all.

It’s theatrical ending was bad enough.

I’m glad they didn’t do this ending, but I really appreciate that marvel was really letting Chloe do her own thing

My immediate thought was "how the hell do you make a compelling sequel to that?

But then I guess that is based on the idea that they had originally planned for an ETERNALS sequel, which they may not have. If the main goal of ETERNALS was to introduce the characters as a concept, and Arishem and Celestials as these larger than life beings, I wouldn't necessarily have been opposed to that. I think the Marvel films are mostly great enough on their own, but the appeal of the furtherance of the story definitely adds tasty flavors to the dish, but they aren't exactly essential

I like the Twilight Zone comparison, but I doubt it would have hit with a similarly eerie effect after the heavily (and unnecessarily) sprinkled comedy up to that point.

Ikaris' sacrifice worked well enough, and the ominous abduction of Sersi with Kingo and Phastos by Arishem was just what the movie needed as a cliffhanger.

My reaction to that ending would've probably been same as to the theatrical ending.

Not like I had any emotional connection to any of the ten new main characters we were shown in the movie.

I wish they went with that ending so we didn’t leave the door open for more films. Eternals was painfully boring to watch.

The movie would have still been terrible/unwatchable regardless. It wouldn’t have made a difference.

That could've worked as well. I trust Chloe to follow uo on whichever ending she chooses regardless of what it is. I haven't seen NWH yet, so right now Eternals is probably still my favorite MCU project of the year.

It’s funny how she’s getting all the flak for this dud whilst Feige is receiving none.

But Feige gets all the praise for No Way Home as opposed to Watts/Sony because that movie was a “hit”.

With that Ending it would have worked to be honest. With The Eternals setting up Arishem as the Macy's next big bad while we are thinking it's Kang.

I like that ending, but not good at all for a sequel. A sequel would surely bring back the dead Eternals + a new Sprite (making her human would likely count as a death for the system) all mind-wipped and bring in some conflict with the ones with their memories. Mind-wipping everyone would just lead to a rethread of this shitty movie, who knows maybe a 2nd go round would lead to a better movie.

I liked the movie, but I don't think it was a good idea to make the Eternals reprogrammable constructs.
