10 New Stills From THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY Released

Apple have debuted 10 brand new images from the first part of Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy. They mainly feature close-ups of our heroes - Bilbo, Gandalf and The Dwarves - but there are a couple potentially spoilery action shots too..

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters December 14th.

When I 1st saw FOTR in theaters, I was disappointed because I had re-read Tolkien so often that NOTHING would meet my unachievable expectations. Then came the extended versions! PJ told Tolkien's tale HIS way and in some ways it was an improvement (sorry Bombadil) and others not so much (Gothmog). As a trilogy, I hope gaps will be filled similarly to the extended versions, thus making this a more complete tale. It may not be perfect (Nori) but it has potential (PJ).

The thing I don't like about this is the dwarve's beards should all be huge! Also Bilbo should be smaller than the dwarves, he's the same size as them in the picture above. I still believe that this movie will kick ass regardless of the flaws I find.

@flannelmandude

I think the reason behind Bilbo being the same size as the dwarves was so Bilbo could act alongside them in all shots, which should make for a better performance and give the movie a better look, cause as you know in the LOTR in the group wide shots they had to film each character individually then incorporate the shots together, or use the stand-in midget guys.

I agree he should be smaller than the dwarves as we seen the size difference in LOTR when the hobbits have been beside Gimli, but I think that because they wont be using as many stand-ins of those little people in the shots or filming actors separately I can accept it.

It baffles me how any fan of the book could NOT be stoked for these films. Everything about them looks fantastic to me.

@RorMachine...just not diggin' the star hair sculpture. One of the things I thought lent to the credibility of LOTR was the natural, weathered look of their hair. Nothing seemed too clean in that movie (except Legolas and the elves). The yak hair used in this has too much product in it ;D

If these movies are even half as good as the Lord of the Rings they'd still be worth watching. I don't really see any cause for alarm in any of the promotional material they've released so far, although the dwarves do look kinda silly in some of the stills.

Is that a young Aragorn?
And I think they made Gandalf a little too young looking as compared to his wrinkles in LOTRs which takes place only 50 years in the future of the Hobbit.
After all, if he's supposed to be thousands of years old, how much would his appearance have changed in a measly 50 years?
Probably about as much as how our features have changed since yesterday.

How is this something that it shouldn't be and who the hell has the guideline rulebook as to how a dwarf is supposed to look? Why do people want all the dwarves to look the same? To each their own, but I don't get it.

TankD@ Shitty makeup? Weta is doing the makeup for the Hobbit films and won awards for their makeup work in the LOTR trilogy. Shitty makeup...okay.

You apparently haven't paid attention to the other characters outside of the dwarves that are part of this film and the book, but if you hate dwarves don't watch the movie. Not too difficult to figure that out.
