Damn that looks worse than I expected. I thought Mamoa might pull it off, but it does not look like it. In the top picture he looks like Conan in the face, but the costume sucks. I do not remember Conan ever wearing a leather kilt.

Cancel this movie, vote Arnie out in California and give us King Conan, with the Rock as one son and Vin Diesel as the other (I remember and miss this rumor). The Rock ala Scorpion King would be a much better Conan even.

WOW! I can't believe how much weight he was able to gain in such a short amount of time!

Not really diggin the costumes, but i still think Momoa will own this role!

Proceed with flames below..... =)

Honestly, I don't think he looks half bad. But then again, I was never a huge Conan fan either, so I'm speaking as a bit of an outsider. What has everyone so riled up? And don't just say, "He looks like crap..." Give some legitimate reasons why he doesn't look like a fit for the role.

Wow. His acting acting and the script had better be stellar because those pictures suck. That does not look like the hyborian age or anything near it. And, as I mentioned in a previous article Conan doesn't need some revenge driven origin story. He's an adventurer because HE'S AN ADVENTURER.

One things for sure the armor almost looks better then Thors........ but not quite.

@BigbyBadWolf - in every form of media that I have ever seen Conan in, he has looked very Ahnold-like (extremely bulky and ripped). Momoa just does not fit that bill. He looks like Conan's malnourished little brother to me. I see a flop of Red Sonja proportions with this one.

@BigbyBadWolf

Let me see if i can squeeze this in before you have to read a 10 paragraph dissertation from someone who views Howard's books as the "bible".

Most are mad for 1 reason......his size. Others will say it's his ethnicity, and finally others will say he is a TV actor and doesn't deserve the shot.....this, of course, is right before they suggest some other TV actor (usually the horrible guy who played HERCULES), or worse-yet....A WRESTLER.

That pretty much sums it up! =)

Conan doesn't have to be super bulky, but he is tall, broad shouldered, and ripped. I think Howard frequently described him as being like a leopard. I hate the way the armor and cloths look so generic. I like that ancient pre-Babylonian/Egyptian feel lots of the art and games have. It was distinctive.
JLanphear
JLanphear - 5/10/2010, 3:15 PM
I think he looks pretty good, to be honest. I have this feeling that as the film goes on, his armor and such will evolve into something more dramatic and original. Something that will be HIS.

I think it looks awesome so far, he fits my Frazetta induced Conan mental image pefectly.

Actually, some of the black and white illustrations from Robert Howard's books show him wearing something that resembles a skirt/kilt. He is shown wearing anything from that, long pants or something similar to a loincloth.

I am very pleased with the muscle that Momoa put on. It works for me. In fact, the title page illustration of Conan from The Conquering Sword of Conan and page 41 shows him to have that type of physique. Amazon.com doesn't allow one to download images from their "search inside a book" feature to screen a book, otherwise I would post the images.

TalontD@ If one looks at Howard's books as the "bible" then Momoa fits the build just right. Those that think he is a massive body-builder type are going strictly by their own interpretation and speculation of what Howard wrote. He directly said in a letter to a friend that Conan was a double of one of his other characters who was 6'2" and 210 lbs.

Massexecution@ Howard described him as being agile and panther-like. ;-) Which doesn't fit well with someone who is big and bulky. Arnold was far from agile and panther-like in build. Typically, the bulkier you are, the slower you are going to be.

Some good points brought up. I do think it has potential if this is not the final or dominant look for the character. I do not actually think Mamoa looks that bad, I just do not like the costume/ armor. However, as I type this I realize I do not know what I want to see. I will just know it when I see it, and first instinct is that this costume is not it. However in movement it might be OK.

I will definitely watch this the first opportunity I get. The way it goes from here will just determine when that opportunity comes (opening night, discount ticket, DVD, or sci-fi re-run. I definitely did not have the same reaction to this picture as I had to the one of Thor.

@Ranger

Haha, your preachin to the choir bro! I really don't get it either! He's seems pretty close to the descriptions to me too. Admittedly, i read the books over a decade ago, but SO MANY people are SO bent outta shape about it. I like the darker skin tone, i like the height/weight ratio, and I really like that Momoa OWNS SH!T with a sword! I think people just have a hard time letting go of their own mental image of what he should look like. There were several times on Stargate: Atlantis where MOMOA looked positively FERAL, and that's how I always pictured "my Conan".

Great post btw!

Not being a huge Conan fan, I think he looks OK. Always thought Arnie was too big (for a barbarian, Conan is a comic character and as such is needlessly huge) but at least Arnie had the balls (pun intended) to wear the leather trunks!

Disappointing. The last time I saw a horrible set pic like this one was with Liev Schreiber smoking a damn cigarette with his beer gut hanging out, as Sabertooth. I noticed in Wolverine, you never saw Liev w/o his shirt! Cuz he looked like sh!t. Mamoa is big, fine, but he ain't ripped. Looks kinda flabby to me. Utterly unremarkable. But let's wait and see what Hollywood wizardry they come up with to pull this turd out of the toilet...
