Variety reports that Douglas Smith - best known for his role in HBO's Big Love - is in final negotiations to co-star in Fox 2000's Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters, a sequel to the 2010 film The Lightning Thief and an adaptation of the second book in the successful fantasy series. It isn't known which character Smith will play, but Logan Lerman and Alexandra Daddario (who starred in the previous film) are reprising their respective roles, with Diary Of A Wimpy Kid's Thor Freudenthal directing.

Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski penned the script. Chris Columbus, who directed The Lightning Thief, will produce with Karen Rosenfelt and Michael Barnathan. Below is a summary for The Sea Of Monsters:

When Thalia's tree is mysteriously poisoned, the magical borders of Camp Half-Blood begin to fail. Now Percy and his friends have just days to find the only magical item powerful enough to save the camp before monsters overrun it. The catch: they must sail into the Sea of Monsters to find it. Along the way, Percy must stage a daring rescue operation to save his old friend Grover. He also learns a terrible secret about his own family, which makes him question whether being the son of Poseidon is an honor or a curse.

Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Sea Of Monsters is set to hit theaters March 27th, 2013.

oh boy was the adaptation of the first book sub par, the movie wasn't bad but it didn't do justice to the books which are pretty decent read.

As who? Well, I love the books, but the first movie didn't do it justice at all; here's hoping this one can be a significant improvement.

I am hoping Annabeth will get recasted...SOON.
Alexandra is sexy, but wayyy too old!

Annasophia Robb would be better for the character!

As for Thalia, Kaya Scodelario!

And, Gina Carano is in talks to play Circe!

I'll say it again: how are they going to do the plot for this when Thalia and Kronos where left out of the first movie?

Not only that but they left out Clarissa and the little prophecy that is the running theme in all the books.

He doesn't seem to fit the physical description of Tyson. My guess is that the studio is going to change the Clarise character from female to male in hopes of getting a young teenage girl audience by putting another young heart throb in the movie.

I hope he's playing Tyson. This was my favorite book followed by Layrinth one. Books are way better than Hunger Games. Though now they'll probably cut out the scene where they shoot a cannonball off a confederate ship to blow up the Hydra.

doesn't fit the physical description of tyson? like he doesn't have one eyeball in the middle of his face? He looks like Percy only much taller.

Douglas Smith kind of looks like Logan Lerman, and he is over 6 foot 3 inches tall, where as Lerman is only 5'8"

Tyson is 6 foot 3 with curly brown hair and brown eyes (or eye rather). Read the books dude. He fits the description a little too well for it to be a coincidence.

Should have stuck with the theme of the books and at least started with the same age group of the book since he is 12 in the first book the movie has him at least 16 a big leap in age. This could have been a good franchise to take Potter's place but they so screwed up the first one, by the time they get to any other stories the kids will be in their 30's.

@HaroldOfGalactus

height isn't everything to be the character of Tyson. being a few inches taller than Lerman is not a big deal, he needs a physical presence to make it apparent that Cyclops are a massive sized species with incredible strength. realistically the guy playing Tyson doesn't need to look anything like Lerman, as he is part of a different species.

lastly his looks are also a factor. it isn't necessary to hire a pretty boy if you are going to put a shitload of makeup and [frick]ed up teeth on him making him unrecognizable as the character he is playing.

^He can't be too unrecognizable. They are pushing the and of Tyson being his brother. Visually, it helps if they have some physical similarities. Especially when he is camoflaged by the mist at the beginning. The whole theme of the second book is about family- about accepting family for who they are no matter what they look like or what they've done.

HaroldOfGalactus - 2/18/2012, 12:43 PM
agreed. they save so much money on special effects and makeup by having someone who already is so much taller than Logan (Tyson is taller than percy in the books, mist objecting his vision or not)
