DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES Hits Rotten Tomatoes With A Near-Perfect 92%

The review embargo for Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has now lifted, and it's fair to say the majority of critics have been won over by this latest take on the fantasy role-playing game...

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves doesn't hit theatres until the 31st, but Paramount Pictures screened the movie for critics quite early at this weekend's SXSW festival, and it looks like the studio had every reason to be confident!

The first reviews for the fantasy adventure are in, and it's currently sitting at a very impressive 92% on Rotten Tomatoes after debuting at a perfect 100% yesterday afternoon.

Only 13 reviews have been counted at this time, so there's obviously a lot of room for fluctuation, but this is still a very positive sign for a movie that really could have gone either way based on its trailers.

Based on what we can gather from these first reactions, Honor Among Thieves is a fun, funny, exciting caper with strong characters and performances. It also sounds like the film pays homage to the classic tabletop game without being a slavishly faithful adaptation.

"A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people," reads the official synopsis. "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure."

Game Night directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley helmed the project, and wrote the latest version of the script based on a previous draft by Michael Gilio. Derek Kolstad (John Wick; The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) has also been hired to write and develop a separate live-action Dungeons & Dragons television show, which was recently given a straight-to-series order for Paramount+.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves arrives in theaters March 31, 2023.

@ProfessorWhy - If it ends around 75%, I’d consider that a win for a D&D movie.

That’s cool, I loved the trailers and hope it would not disappoint.
Glad to see it’s not going to be another dud like ant man and black Adam.

Well, that's surprising, from the trailers it looked like the kind of movie that would be ravaged by critics.

Never played or had any real interest in D&D, but the trailers for this movie looked promising. Good to see people liking it.

The logline of the only (to date) negative review on Rotten Tomatoes is “Oh, great. Now there’s going to be a Dungeons and Dragons Cinematic Universe, isn’t there?” Not really judging the movie as much as he’s annoyed by the genre.

We’re seeing an advanced screening with my D&D party next week, and we’re all pretty excited. I’m glad it’s gotten positive reception.
