Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves wasn't close to the hit the studio was hoping for, but the door may still be open for a sequel... under one condition.
Paramount Pictures and eOne's recent fantasy adaptation received highly positive reviews from critics (it's sitting at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an equally impressive 93% audience score), but despite a fairly strong opening weekend and an A- CinemaScore, the movie simply failed to find its feet at the box office.
Honor Among Thieves finished its theatrical run back in May, with a disappointing final tally of $93M domestic/$207M worldwide on a $150M budget. Factoring in advertising costs, etc, and the chances of a sequel being greenlit seemed somewhere between slim and none.
However, there may be hope for a follow-up yet.
In Variety's in-depth profile of Paramount Pictures boss Brian Robbins, the exec acknowledges that the movie underperformed and will "lose money," but he hasn't ruled out the possibility of a sequel - as long as they can "figure out a way to make it for less."
We do know that a small-screen spin-off is still being developed for the Paramount+ streaming service, so the studio clearly hasn't completely lost faith in the (potential) franchise - though bringing in another FX-heavy big-screen adventure on a budget may prove to be a challenge.
"A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people," reads the official synopsis. "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure."
Game Night directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley helmed the project, and wrote the latest version of the script based on a previous draft by Michael Gilio.
