Paramount and eOne's big-budget Dungeons and Dragons adaptation has added two more to its cast, with Michelle Rodriguez (Avatar, Fast 9) and Justice Smith (Detective Pikachu, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) set to join Chris Pine in supporting roles.

No details on their characters were provided, but then, the trades don't really seem to know much about the movie other than the fact that it'll be based on the best-selling fantasy adventure role-playing game of the same name, and is expected to incorporate "storytelling and game-playing aspects."

We recently learned that Derek Kolstad (John Wick; The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) has also been hired to write and develop a live-action Dungeons & Dragons television series, but again, details are few and far between.

Game Night directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are set to helm the project, and also wrote the latest version of the script based on a previous draft by Michael Gilio.

Rodriguez has appeared in the likes of Avatar, the Resident Evil movies, and Widows, and will be seen next in the latest Fast and Furious movie, F9. Smith recently starred in Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, and is set to reprise his Fallen Kingdom role for Jurassic World: Dominion.

Please be good. Please be good. Please be good.

And please don’t be Jumanji.

@TheUnworthyThor - I really have a feeling they’ll go the Jumanji route. It has that “proven success model” studio execs love. And in a game about role playing your character, it does make some sense thematically and could lead to the humor DND sessions sometimes give players. That’s, of course, if the film’s creators understand any of this or instead just stick with “I’M A BIG GUY PLAYING A DWARF? / I’M THE JOCK PLAYING AN ELF?”

By the way, I’d also love for them to not use this model. Give us a straight story set in one of these worlds. People are way into fantasy these days. Here’s to hoping for a good Dragonlance adaption someday soon!

@TheUnworthyThor - I mean they kind of already did a jumanji thing with D&D before jumanji. Don't have high hopes for the film but remember liking this cartoon as a kid.

I've never played D&D but I like this cast so far. I can see this as being a medieval GOTG and less of a serious LOTR type of film.

For me the safest bet is to make it a live action version of the 80's animated show, just cut some of the corny stuff and they may have a winner.

@ARMUS - Just posted about this as a reply up above and then saw this. Yeah makes sense if they want the game play to be part of the story rather than just a story set in a d&d fantasy realm. Instead of it being a random event where they are portaled to the fantasy world, they could be playing a game or be near someone playing a game and get sucked in. That way you get a mix of the kids who know what's happening and the one's that where just too close when the portal opened... wait I think I have my own D&D script to write...

Has Michelle Rodriguez ever played a character that wasn't just Michelle Rodriguez? Hard to see her fit into a D&D movie but hey maybe I just haven't seen enough of her work, just not usually a fan her schtick

Oh, cool, Michelle Rodriguez! So that means this movie includes a tough female character with a bad attitude who don't need no man and don't take no s*** from nobody.
