THE LORD OF THE RINGS: Andy Serkis Will Direct And Star As Gollum In New 2026 Live-Action Movie

Warner Bros. has officially unveiled its plans for a new live-action The Lord of the Rings movie, which will see Andy Serkis direct and reprise the role of Gollum...

We got confirmation that more live-action movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien's classic fantasy adventure novels, The Lord of the Rings, were officially in-development last year, and it's now been announced that the first film will hit theaters in 2026 - with Andy Serkis set to direct and reprise the role of Gollum!

Original LOTR trilogy director Peter Jackson and his writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are also on board as producers, and “will be involved every step of the way” according to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.

"Lord of the Rings is one of the most successful and revered franchises in history and presents a significant opportunity for theatrical business,” added the WBD boss.

The movie's working title is The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which should give you a pretty good idea of what the story will focus on! This time period wasn't a major part of Tolkien's novels, but does get a mention, with Aragorn revealing that he tracked Smeagol down to get information on the one ring prior to the wretch falling into Sauron's clutches.

How much story can be mined from this premise remains to be seen, but if the likes of Aragorn and Gandalf are involved, it's probably a safe bet that new actors will be cast in the roles.

“It is an honour and a privilege to travel back to Middle-earth with our good friend and collaborator, Andy Serkis, who has unfinished business with that Stinker – Gollum!,” Jackson, Boyens and Walsh said in a statement. “As life long fans of Professor Tolkien’s vast mythology, we are proud to be working with Mike De Luca, Pam Abdy and the entire team at Warner Bros. on another epic adventure!”

“Yesssss, Precious. The time has come once more to venture into the unknown with my dear friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle Earth Peter, Fran and Philippa,” added Serkis. “With Mike and Pam, and the Warner Bros team on the quest as well, alongside WETA and our film making family in New Zealand, it’s just all too delicious…”.

“For over two-decades, moviegoers have embraced the Lord of the Rings film trilogy because of the undeniable devotion Peter, Fran and Philippa have shown towards protecting the legacy of Tolkien’s works, and to ensure audiences could experience the incredible world he created in a way that honors his literary vision,” WBD film chiefs Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca added. “We are honored they have agreed be our partners on these two new films. With Andy coming aboard to direct Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum(*WT), we continue an important commitment to excellence that is a true hallmark of how we all want to venture ahead and further contribute to the Lord of the Rings cinematic history.”

@nibs - This is so much worse.

Instead of turning one small book into 3 overly long movies, they're gonna turn one sentence into 3 overly long movies (because you gotta get that trilogy money).

Yes, bring more of JACKSON'S Middle-Earth.

Favourite trilogy of all time. Have a miniature of this bad boy in my room:

@marvel72 - the hobbit trilogy got better with LESS movies. The Maple Films cut is still the definitive way to watch the movie. Single film cut back to be more in line with the book

@marvel72 - The first two were alright despite all the unnecessary filler, the 3rd was an absolute CGI-laden mess.

Only because it's Andy Serkis who is involved does this sounds a bit interesting. Otherwise this is just a desperate cash cow grab as it's crudely said by Zaslav there: "a significant opportunity for theatrical business".

TBH I think that maybe they could bring back Viggo Mortensen and easily de-age him like how they've done it before with other actors in different projects. If so they should aim for how Michael Douglas looked like in his 80s flashback in Ant-Man.

Then this takes place when Gollum, or Sméagol as he used to be known, got his hands on the ring.

Right after murdering his friend.

@NinnesMBC - it is a business at the end of the day but I get yah , I don’t trust Zaslav

However the involvement of Serkis aswell as Jackson and his writing partners from the original dies give hope.

@NinnesMBC - I’m sorry, is there a movie in the Entertainment BUSINESS that isn’t a cash grab?

@TheVisionary25 - I abhor that guy lmao, want him gone.

Yeah it's the silver lining in the project. Their involvement means that they care to do something that is worth revisiting Middle-Earth again. In them I trust, certainly.

@DudeGuy - It's all about how you present it as, it's my point. And when there's a source material that has been properly explored and adapted and there aren't anymore available original content to bring to life, in this case the books, it can look exactly like how I called it.

It's not like Lionsgate was trying to force new Hunger Games films after 2015's Mockingjay final installment took place. They did other things until Suzanne Collins came up many years later with something new and then they worked on it.

That's what I meat.

TheVisionary25 - 5/9/2024, 11:39 AM
@NinnesMBC - yeah , seemed like it was a hit more with critics

That’s the best route imo , one should always make up their own opinion
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 5/9/2024, 12:05 PM
@TheVisionary25 - Sometimes that's good enough for me tbh. If the critics like something that I'm looking forward then it's like a safety net. It's a bonus, but even if their reaction was the opposite I would still have to see it to know if I agree or not with them.

Yeah, come to your own conclusions. Know your truth.

I would prefer that they go back and make a good The Hobbit film. Perhaps they could just edit down the original film with some reshoots 🤔
Clintthahamster

@Izaizaiza - The Coen Bros' director's cut of Blood Simple was three minutes shorter than the theatrical version. I always thought that was such a baller move.
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 5/9/2024, 11:51 AM
@clintthahamster - I can't think of any other movie where they squeezed a simple story out so far as they did with The Hobbit, and in the process destroyed the charm of the Book.

@clintthahamster - I will have to check out the director's cut of blood simple!

@Izaizaiza - they’ve done this and it is actually really good. Look up the Maple Films Hobbit film. A professional editor edited down the whole trilogy to the length of Return of the King. This is the version I now watch as part of my yearly marathon. It really does bring out the best of those movies while losing the worst of it.

ProfessorWhy - 5/9/2024, 12:04 PM
@Izaizaiza - Tolkien considered The Hobbit to be a children's tale of an an event that happened within the lore, hence the retelling in the vein of TLOTR

Cool , I hope it turns out well!!.

I love Serkis as an actor but him as a director gives me pause , I never saw Breathe or his Jungle Book movie but I didn’t like Venom:LTBC.

I will say that I’m sure some will have problems with them mining LOTR for more but that world is rich so why not I feel…

Granted , I’m a casual fan and found Rings of Power S1 enjoyable so what do I know?.

Hm….this could work so I’m cautiously interested.

There is enough material here that was all cut from LotR. Gollum being captured by Sauron and “escaping” imprisonment, then being hunted down by Aragorn and taken to the wood elves and interrogated by Gandalf before then escaping Thranduil.

There is enough meat here to do something….but the question still remains if following Gollum for a whole movie would work. Also Serkis is great in the role but his directing resume is a little spotty. Honestly I trust him and New Line more than Amazon.

MrDandy - 5/9/2024, 11:48 AM
Also you get a nice battle even at the end of the story with the orcs attacking the elves and him using it as a cover to get away. The more I’m remembering this side of the story, the more I really think there is plenty of material here for a film.
