The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power Showrunner Explains Why Season 3 Is A Soft Reboot

When The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power returns for Season 3 on November 11, the Prime Video series will be more in line with the "classic" Middle-earth storytelling that proved so popular in Peter Jackson's movies.

A five-year time jump means we'll pick up with Sauron cementing his power and coming even closer to forging The One Ring. For fans who grew frustrated with the first two seasons or those eager to tune in without having to catch up, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power's showrunners promise Season 3 will serve as a soft reboot.

It's a smart way to win over lapsed fans, particularly as Amazon is reportedly committed to producing five seasons of the pricey TV series.

Talking to IGN (via SFFGazette.com), co-showrunner Patrick McKay said, "We really love the idea of throwing the viewer in, in a way that is a completely fresh start. J.D. Payne, my co-showrunner and I, we're huge admirers of shows that have done this kind of [time jump] before, like Battlestar Galactica and Halt and Catch Fire. That can be really fun for a viewer."

"Hopefully, this season is a great jumping-on point for fans," he continued. "And it truly starts with people talking about the One Ring."

Unsurprisingly, McKay hinted that shooting the first two seasons of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power back-to-back was a strain, especially when production moved from New Zealand to the UK. Fortunately, that wasn't a factor here.

"I think our goal for Season 3 is really to blow the doors off the hinges," McKay said after admitting that getting a little more breathing space to make this latest batch of episodes proved beneficial. "We're really proud of Seasons One and Two, but... for us, now, in some ways, we're starting a whole new story. This is turning the page on the show."

Sauron's rise will also open the door to exploring what it means for the Orcs who eventually serve him. The series will introduce Marnouk, an Orc who arrives in Rivendell after defecting from the villain's army.

"He claims to know all kinds of things about Sauron's strategy and reveals to the Elves that Sauron is trying to make the One Ring," McKay teased. "And if he succeeds, he will defeat everyone, including the Orcs, because the One Ring will now make them subservient to him, slaves to him forever, and there'll never be another Orc rebellion like Adar, who died last season, led."

In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3, Middle-earth is at war. Five years have passed since the fall of Eregion. Sauron’s armies have marched across the whole of the world, conquering all in their path.

Only a few isolated pockets stand between the Dark Lord and total victory – Khazad-dûm, where the Dwarves are now sealed deep within their mountain halls, and the elven realms of Lindon and Rivendell, which are protected by their Three Rings.

But deep in the land of Mordor, in his newly completed tower of Barad-dûr, the Dark Lord toils day and night, obsessed with harnessing a power that will bring the last of his enemies to their knees: One Ring to rule them all...

The first four episodes of Season 3 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere on November 11, 2026. Then episodes five and six will be available to stream on November 18, while the final two episodes of the season will be released on November 25.

The explanation is that season 2 was horrible in every way. Everyone who watched it knows this.

@DocSpock - yet I still find the first 2 seasons better than Gunn’s DCU content.

The only reason it's a soft reboot is that no one cares or watches this obscenely expensive dud of a show that failed to find an audience, so they're banking that just maybe, if they present the new season as something fresh and new, people might watch.
Spoiler alert: they won't.

Sounds good imo!!.

Given where S2 ended , it made sense to have some sort of time skip but 5 years still seems a bit much though we’ll see if it works in execution or not.

S1 felt like a prelude to an extent and S2 was laying the groundwork even moreso via Sauron & Celebrimbor amongst other things so hitting the ground running with the War between the Elves & Sauron atleast already in progress makes sense given it goes on for a bit in lore hence picking up in the midst of it as Sauron is seemingly getting close to forging the One Ring is the most dramatically rich point for the purposes of telling a story imo.

Anyway , I have liked the show thus far so can’t wait for S3!!.
