The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power S3 Is "Epic & Breathtaking" According To Social Media Reactions

The first social media reactions to the upcoming third season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power are in, and, for what it's worth, they are glowing...

Though some critics have been sent all 8 episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3, they still seem to be under embargo for the time being. However, the first 2 episodes were previewed at some recent screenings, and those in attendance have been sharing their reactions on social media.

Though it's obviously difficult to get a proper read on an entire season based on the first couple of instalments, the response has been glowing so far. That said, most of these critics seem to be big fans of the previous seasons, so these new episodes may not make many converts.

Charlie Vickers is once again singled out for his performance as Sauron, but it sounds like new character Marnûkh (Adam Young), an Orc who claims to have defected from Sauron's army, is also a standout.

“We love the idea of exploring what orcs were before they became soulless, mindless slaves to Sauron’s will," co-showrunner J.D. Payne said in a recent interview. "So out of that was born this idea of an orc who would risk everything to defect, go to the Elves and say: ‘We have a common enemy.’”

The notion of an Orc being presented as anything but a rampaging, sadistic beast is sure to be another sticking point for a lot of Tolkien purists, although more casual fans seem to be on board.

Check out the reactions below, and we'll update as more come in.

New cast members include Eddie Marsan (Clayface) as King Durin IV’s older brother, Thrain; Andrew Richardson (Guys & Dolls) as Elendil’s younger son and Isildur’s brother, Anarion; and Adam Young (Don’t Breathe 2) as Marnûkh, who is described as “a mysterious Orc who may not be what he seems.”

The Boys and Shawn of the Dead star Simon Pegg will voice the Balrog.

"Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will."

"Building on Season 1’s epic scope and ambition, Season 2 of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness, challenging each to find their place in a world that is increasingly on the brink of calamity."

"Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots... as friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good will struggle ever more valiantly to hold on to what matters to them most of all.. each other."

Returning cast members include Morfydd Clark, Benjamin Walker, Charles Edwards, Charlie Vickers, Markella Kavenagh, Nazanin Boniadi, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Tyroe Muhafidin, Maxim Baldry, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Owain Arthur, Trystan Gravelle, Ema Horvath, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Leon Wadham, Daniel Weyman, and Sara Zwangobani.

I know I'm in the minority, but I did enjoy this show. Not all episodes were great or even good really, but overall not a bad show!

@jlabatman - i didnt like season 1 but every single complaint I had, season 2 corrected each one. Really enjoyed that season, even on rewatch. All the Sauron, Celebrimbor stuff was great. Tom Bombadil and Gandalf find his staff and name, awesome. I think if anyone gives the show a chance, they'd enjoy it. Maybe not if you are a stickler for the lore, if you can get over that hump its pretty good.

Sweet , sounds good!!.

Charlie Vickers has been a standout or perhaps even MVP of the show since the S1 finale when his true identity is revealed so him being a/the highlight for many people again isn’t surprising but does make me happy since he truly has been fantastic in the role of Sauron imo.

Also in regards to their being a good orc , Tolkien himself wrestled with his depiction of them when he was crafting the lore given they were sentient beings with independent thought but he had already established that only God or Iruvutar could create true life while evil or Sauron could only corrupt or mock existing life hence creating a contradiction and moral conflict for Men’s & Elves that would slaughter them.

By giving the Orcs more nuance in this show , they seem to be bridging the gap of them being creatures of soul to the truly corrupted and amoral ones we see later on so us having a “good” orc who has defected and is trying to help is a fun idea imo.

Anyway , I have liked the show thus far (S2>S1) and can’t wait for this season!!.

The dialogue sounds just as bad as last season from the trailer. It really makes you appreciate the House of the Dragon writers. When i watch that series I don't often get the feeling I'm watching a television series. I'm absorbed in the world and character work. In Rings of Power, I just constantly am reminded I'm watching fan fiction of the tallest order. You would think with how much money they have invested they'd be able to get some Tolkien dialect scholars who can help them map the story they wanna tell with genuinely Tolkien esque dialogue but the showrunners seem to want to die on their hill.

Didn't really enjoy the first season , managed to finish it but decided to call it there to not ruin the legacy of the movies. Sometimes its better to act like it doesnt exist like Home Alone 3 haha.

I’m sure the social media accounts were very selectively chosen to get positive word of mouth.

So no one noticed that the reviews are identical and have the same text? These are so clearly copy-and-paste comments fed to the "reviewer" by the network.

Sure it is. Or maybe people's expectations are so low that anything resembling a 4/10 is "breathtaking"

Reboot the MCU and DCU

It had its moments but I didn’t think Season 1 was as very good. But I thought they made steps and improved in Season 2 as I did enjoy the Sauron/Annatar arc. Hopefully they’ll continue to make steps for season 3, but I’m just wondering what is the endgame with this show at this point. Between the source and the films we all know how this story ends. Is this show supposed to be building up to the war of the Last Alliance?

Season 2 was so awful that I'll never watch any more of this. And I'll pass on Hunt for Gollum too.

And it pains me. I have been a rabid LOTR fan for 55 years reading and watching everything multiple times. But the long bloated Hobbit trilogy"!" and season 2 of this were just too much.

Time for tequila, cookies, and another reread of the Silmarillion.

These writers continue to explore garbage concepts and lame ideas. Orcs before they’re bad and ohh look one is going to team up with the Elves. Probably need a romantic hook in there for some hot Elf/Orc action. Sorry they don’t respect you JRR.

I’m usually even keel and try to find a middle view, but this whole thing is a travesty.
