Netflix has announced that the first trailer for Greta Gerwig's Narnia: Magician's Nephew will be released online tomorrow, while sharing a first look at the official poster.

The artwork features Digory and Polly taking flight on Fledge the winged horse, with stars taking the shape of Aslan in the background.

Gerwig recently confirmed that Meryl Streep will voice the iconic magical lion.

“I wanted someone who was profound but not pretentious, who had gravitas but not morose self-seriousness. Someone who could communicate depth and pathos as well as joy and delight,” the Barbie director told Empire in a recent interview. “I wanted someone who was older than 70, so there was a wisdom of experience, but who also had the capacity of fresh wonder, like a child. And also to be one of the greatest actors to ever do it. That list is not a long one.”

Gerwig also revealed that the late great David Bowie was a source of inspiration, both for the look of Aslan (who has multicolored eyes and a red-striped face in this version) as well as the essence of the movie.

“David Bowie saved my life. Paul McCartney saved my life. David Gilmour saved my life. Pete Townshend saved my life. Jimmy Page, Robert Plant. When I heard their music, I had this deep sense of [thinking], ‘You’re gonna be OK.’”

As it relates to the fantasy adventure itself, she said, “Narnia is literally a world made out of music. It is a world sung to life by Aslan, and rock ’n’ roll to me felt like a world made out of music.”

The Magician’s Nephew serves as a prequel to C.S. Lewis' first book, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and follows two children, Digory and Polly, who are the first to discover the “Wood between the Worlds,” aka Narnia, after their uncle (Daniel Craig) gives them a magical ring.

David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell, Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan and Ciarán Hinds round out the cast.

Gerwig’s adaptation of the sixth book in the classic series was set to be released in IMAX theaters this Thanksgiving before heading to the streamer on Christmas Day. The movie will now be getting a release on Feb. 12, 2027, before hitting Netflix on April 2, 2027. Sneak previews of the film will begin on Feb. 10, 2027, only in IMAX.

@Matchesz - At these times, nothing can surprise me. We are getting to ridiculous levels so high, I could expect a new Star Wars to have Darth Vader as a woman.

@Matchesz - I guess it'll depend on how much it sounds like Meryl Streep. Maybe she'll do a really deep voice and they'll enhance it with effects.

It's not even just the androgynous Aslan - though that's more than enough. The "rock opera" aesthetic, David Bowie as her inspiration, these things are incompatible with the spirit of Narnia. Changing the timeline from the Edwardian period to the 1950's changes absolutely everything, including completely ruining the future stories of the Pevensie children. This story is not hers to tell, it's C.S. Lewis', and she was given stewardship of it but instead of respecting the story she's perverting it to tell the version she wants to. It's utterly criminal.

@Super12 - most of the famous ale cartoon characters and even anime male characters are voiced by women

doesnt make the characters androgenous

there has been nothing to indicate Aslan is female or androgynous lol

Bart Simpson is voiced by a woman

TheFinestSmack - 10/13/2026, 7:35 AM
@twistedcastles - True but nearly all females that voice males are bringing to life male children or teens with high pitched voices. Aslan's voice is described in the books as deep and resonant. There's a chance Streep can get there but unless they plan on using some effects, I'm worried Aslan will just sound like Meryl Streep.

Super12 - 10/13/2026, 9:56 AM
@twistedcastles - that's either a very naive or disingenuous take. There is zero reason for any director to cast any female voice actor for a character like Aslan, not only because doing so would be an inaccurate to how he's described, but also because of the significance of the statement you're making. It doesn't make sense from a technical/artistic perspective or a business perspective, considering the inevitable massive blowback considering who this particular character is.

Narnia is a Christian allegory. Aslan doesn't just represent Jesus, in the books he says himself that in our world he goes by another name. Aslan = Jesus. Everyone knows this. So the decision to cast a female is undeniably intentional. It's not because Meryl Streep is the only or best person to voice an adult male lion, that's hogwash. It's because Greta is intentionally injecting her own views on God into this film, which are in direct opposition to the soul of the book she's adapting. It's a direct affront to C.S. Lewis, Christianity, and the millions of devoted fans of these books.

Bart Simpson doesn't represent an entire religion. It has no significance whatsoever if he's voiced by a woman. But playing around with the portrayal of the character that represents God? That matters to people, and it mattered to the author.

It's a wicked and utter betrayal.

Narnia is funky in that the deeper you go into the books the harder they get to turn into cohesive movies. I remember BBC took a crack at Silver Chair lol, (Puddleglum, the original Jar-Jar), and has anyone ever even tried Horse and his Boy? It's clearly still a recognizable, even bankable brand, as they keep trying to make something of it all, but you are wading into mud as soon as LWW ends. Starting here seems like a good idea but it's the weak connections between the books that lets it down as a continuing franchise for the screen; characters you spend a whole movie developing either vanish completely or are mentioned a handful of times, and when they do come back it's in confused and complicated ways.

Hold on here folks -- this may bomb, but the concepts are sound and even full circle...makes all the sense in the world. David Bowie. Paul McCartney. David Gilmour Pete Townshend Jimmy Page, Robert Plant -- these guys grew up on the Narnia series, and other C.S.Lewis works, as well as his companion-in-arms Tolkien. I think this may be quite cool and isn't off the rails at all...maybe we will just have to have an open mind and perhaps a few drinks before hitting the theater :)
