From Academy Award-winning film-maker Peter Jackson comes The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, the third in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by JRR Tolkien. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town.Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo's frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. Nice! This trilogy might not be as good as the LotR, but it's still entertaining and I'm happy that we're able to experience another journey through Middle Earth.

Heh, yet another Hobbit thread that gets completely taken over by news for another movie completely.

I'm saying this now since I most likely won't be here for the full teaser tomorrow, but I'm willing to bet any amount of money that the teaser will have little to no footage of the ACTUAL main character of this story: Bilbo.

Everything will focus on Gandalf, Sauron, Azog and the orcs, Thorin, and of course Smaug. Basically, anyone and everyone other than Bilbo. Which really sums up what's gone wrong with this entire trilogy. I'll never understand how anyone can love or even like a trilogy of movies that treats its own main character as if he were an expendable, minor, inconsequential supporting character.

It really makes me wonder whether Jackson and co. actually remembered how much the book was centered on Bilbo. I get the impression that they flipped to the chapter promising a big battle (FIVE armies? Phwoooaaaar!), and then threw it away when they realised that the entire thing was presented from the perspective of someone who wasn't even conscious for the entirety of the scene.

There's a reason Tolkien didn't have a massive stone-giant brawl at the beginning of the story, or have a made-up grudge between Thorin and Azog, or show us where Gandalf went and what he was up to when he left the Company, or have ALL the Dwarves rush into Smaug's lair and lead him on a time-wasting, merry little chase under the Mountain, or actually show what happened with most of the Battle of the 5 Armies...because all of that would take away from the main focus of the story: Bilbo.

Jackson & Co doesn't seem to understand that, though. They're FAR more preoccupied with tying together EVERYTHING with LotR, and upping the stakes whenever they can to make it as BIG and EPIC as possible, on par with LotR. But he doesn't realize how much he's putting his main character on the sidelines with nothing to do IN HIS OWN STORY. I mean, what excuse is there for that? These movies shouldn't even be titled "The Hobbit" anymore.
