THE HOBBIT: First Look At Luke Evans As 'Bard The Bowman'

As any Tolkien buff will know, Bard plays a very significant role towards the end of The Hobbit, but we had yet to see so much as a glimpse of actor Luke Evans in character as the Laketown bowman, until now. Check out some BTS images after the jump..

The Welsh actor - who has had supporting roles in Clash Of The Titans and Robin Hood among other things - recently revealed that Bard will have a significantly larger role in Peter Jackson's movie(s) than he did in the book, which to be fair, wouldn't exactly be difficult! Big thanks to Celluloid And Cigarette Burns for the pics, pay em a visit at the link below.

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters December 14th.

The cartoon is most certainly NOT shit, or anything close to it. Our upcoming adaptation may be better, and it will certainly be more thorough, but that does not mean the cartoon adaptation was bad. Please consider when it came out. That was a low period for animation, with very little theatrical animation being produced, and TV animation being heavily censored by the networks' Nazi nannies. Bakshi cared enough to produce the film in full animation, and he did the best job he could with the tools he had available.

As to our first look at Bard the Bowman, he certainly doesn't disappoint. The usual fine job is done by the costume department. Regulars around here know how purist I am about costumes, and one of the things I love most about Jackson's Tolkien films is how everyone looks just as I always imagined them when I read the books. If only superhero films took such care to make the characters appear just as they do in the books!

It should be a while until we see him, though. He shouldn't show up at all until the second film. We're what- a month out from seeing the first one now? I'll be there Thursday night when it opens.

this is funny to me cause I have always said that Luke Evans is like a more manly Orlando Bloom, and here they are both Archers in Middle Earth!
