The Northman is set to slash its way into theatres in The UK and Ireland this Friday, and Focus Features (via SFF Gazette) has now released a final trailer and a pair of clips spotlighting plenty of new footage from Robert Eggers' acclaimed Viking revenge tale.

The trailer also highlights some of the praise that's been heaped upon the movie by critics, with many hailing The Lighthouse director's latest as a masterpiece. The clips are also well worth a watch, but beware that one, in particular, is heavy on spoilers (that said, this story was the inspiration for Hamlet, so you probably already know what happens).

Set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century, Alexander Skarsgård plays the Viking prince Amleth, who witnesses his father's (Hawke) murder at the hands of his own brother (Claes Bang) as a child and vows vengeance. He returns as an adult alongside a fellow warrior played by Anya-Taylor Joy, and begins his bloody campaign to rescue his mother Queen Gudrun (Kidman) and claim his birthright.

Check out the new trailer and extended clips below, and be sure to drop back for our review of the film this weekend.

The Northman also stars Murray McArthur, Ian Gerard Whyte, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, and Kate Dickie. The movie is set to hit theatres on April 15 in The UK and April 22 in the US.

Looks like Eggers is pretty disappointed with his first big budget experience and the whole interventions from the studio. Anyway, cant wait to see it, even if it's not the version Eggers had in mind.

@Nunyabiz - He definitely would make an awesome Norse Mythology Thor.
Marvel Thor is a completely different deal altogether that has always embraced a cosmic side to the Asgardian cultures and tries to be more PG13 for most of the stories.

@mdwilliamson24 - I understand that, the character changed almost completely from a arrogant royal to a frat boy by the third movie. Look at his speech pattern from the first movie to the third.

@Nunyabiz - Yeah he definitely talks way different.
Movies are tricky because you have to find what works best for a broader audience, especially in franchise films.
They tried to go the more regal route in the first two movies and while some of it worked, the mass audience wasn't really embracing his character. The biggest gripe from the first two movies was Thor was boring and overshadowed by Loki.
Not everyone likes the more comedic Thor but it has definitely struck a chord with audiences as he went from being called the most boring Avenger to many fans new favorite character.

But yeah, I'd love a true epic ,badass ,dirty, brutal take on Norse Mythology one day and Eggers would be perfect, but he may not be interested if it'd be too similar to the Northman.

@mdwilliamson24 - Marvel Thor is an accurate reinterpretation of the stories from Prose and Poetic Eddas, and its tone and setting are accurate to the myths, as well as the existence of most, if not all characters that are mentioned in myths and sagas, such as Thor's siblings outside Loki, like Baldr, Vidar, Tyr, Hermod. The MCU Thor is not accurate to the comics and is a mockery of it. Read Thor stories like Wolves of the North to see that The Northman has more in common with Thor comics than the MCU ever did.

Again, comics were written by smart people who have read the source material, not some comedy hacks who couldn't be bothered with such things.

@mdwilliamson24 - we could've had an epic norse mythology-inspired Thor in the MCU if Kenneth Branagh stayed alongside J.M. Straczynski. His comics are already epic and like the mythology m

While i loved The Lighthouse, most of what is shown here is an almost 1:1 copy of the Conan the Barbarian movie.

I am going to watch it none the less.
