Wicked has been filming for quite a while now, and director Jon M. Chu has finally shared a first official look (via SFFGazette.com) at his upcoming big-screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical.

The filmmaker Tweeted out the following production stills, featuring Ariana Grande as Glinda, who will ultimately become the "Good Witch of the East," and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the "Wicked Witch of the West."

The shots are taken from a distance, so it's difficult to make out the actors' features, but based on these images, Wicked looks set to be an altogether darker affair than The Wizard of Oz - which was a pretty dark tale itself when you think about it!

We recently learned that Wizard of Oz fans will get the chance to follow the Yellow-Brick Road a little earlier than expected, as Universal Pictures moved up the film's release date. Wicked is now set to hit theaters on Nov. 27, 2024 — just under a month ahead of schedule.

The prequel story will recount everything that happened before Dorothy 's journey, and tell the story of how a green-skinned woman named Elphaba becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.

. Additional cast members include Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible and Ethan Slater as Boq

I remember seeing (and hearing) Erivo in Bad Times at the El Royale. That was her movie.

@WakandanQueen - She slays in the movie. That was my introduction to her as well. I find that film to be highly underrated. It's also the movie that finally sold me on Dakota Johnson!

I remember seeing the stage show with my wife a little over ten years ago. It was entertaining (though our seats sucked and I kinda feel like it was a show you needed to be close to appreciate the visual details). I'm not sure a movie version is going to make an impact the way the stage show did almost twenty years ago. They waited way too long to get the movie out, and the whole culture of movies has changed so much. Wicked needs to be an event, and big blockbuster movies just aren't events the way they used to be.

@keithvw - My ex wife made my fly her to New York for this show lol I was surprised how much fun the show was. It's a pretty nonsensical story though I'm curious how they'll make a coherent movie out of it

@UncleHarm1 - Yeah I think that's one of the problems. One of the highlights of the show was seeing a classic tale told in a more contemporary style. The story didn't need to make much sense.

But today, I feel like all we get are classic tales told in a contemporary style.

I could be wrong, but I feel like the stage show and the movie will be completely different, with the movie resorting to being just another cookie-cutter fantasy flick that's forgotten about in a month.

@keithvw - Classic tales in a contemporary style is a nice way to put it lol. The stage show had great puppets and wire stunts and set design to set it apart from other shows I was forced to see but the movie will probably only be interested in the singing

Another prequel where we learn how the Wicked Witch becomes the wicked witch except this time there is no Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams or Mila Kunis. I kind of wish we would've gotten a sequel to the Oz Great And Powerful that sees the evel witches strike back and the movie ends with Dorothy's house falling on Evanora.

@defenderofthefaith - Same too, highly underrated. Problem is everyone just kept complaining that James Franco was miscasted and not charismatic enough as a lead, which I kinda agree but the plot and raimi's direction were great.

@mastakilla39 - it should have been Robert Downey Jr as Oz

Okay if they are making a Wicked movie, there is no f**king excuse why they can't just make an adaptation of the Beetlejuice musical instead of making Beetlejuice 2.

Evan Peters as BJ
Ruby Stokes as Lydia
Freddie Stroma as Adam
Cristin Milioti as Barbara
Rob McElhenney as Charles Deetz
Kaitlin Olson as Delila
Bowen Yang as Otho
