Rumor: Ryan Gosling Will Be Officially Announced As Ghost Rider During Marvel's SDCC Panel

It seems we may have early word on one of Marvel Studios' major casting announcements for later on today during San Diego Comic-Con...

Rumors have circulated that Ryan Gosling might be on Marvel Studios' radar to play a new take on Ghost Rider for quite a while, and it looks like we may get confirmation that the Project Hail Mary star will hit the road as the MCU's Spirit of Vengeance during today's Hall H panel.

According to scooper Daniel Richtman, Gosling has been "officially cast as Ghost Rider in the MCU."

Gosling was asked about the persistent rumors during a recent interview, and admitted that "some discussions" have taken place.

"I don't know what to say. We keep hope alive. Some discussions have been had. It's a complicated situation."

Assuming this turns out to be accurate (we'll find out soon), could we see the flame-headed antihero make his debut in Avengers: Doomsday? We have heard that this was in the cards, but plans appear to have changed, and Secret Wars now seems a lot more likely.

Rumors of an MCU Ghost Rider reboot picked up steam following the release of the Disney+ Werewolf By Night Special Presentation. A Midnight Sons project is said to be in the early stages of development (we may get an official announcement today), but either way, it seems unlikely that Marvel Studios will leave Ghost Rider on the shelf for too much longer.

Several characters have held the Ghost Rider mantle in the comics over the years, including Johnny Blaze, Robbie Reyes, Danny Ketch, Alejandra Jones, Michael Badilino, and Kushala. Nicolas Cage played Blaze in two poorly-received movies, and more recently, Gabriel Luna portrayed Reyes in the now-defunct Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D TV series.

Luna was all set to reprise the role for a solo series, but the project was shelved after the Marvel Television banner was disbanded.

What do you make of this rumor? Drop us a comment down below.

Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars were hit with significant delays last year, with Doomsday now set to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026, and Secret Wars positioned for December 17, 2027.

Both movies will be directed by the Russo brothers, who also make their MCU return after helming Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame

"Universes collide and the Multiverse Saga begins its final chapter in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday. Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered. This epic film will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

Doomsday will star:

Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Lewis Pullman as Sentry, Florence Pugh as Yelena, Danny Ramirez as Falcon, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Sebastian Stan as Bucky, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, James Marsden as Cyclops, Channing Tatum as Gambit, and Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent

Along with Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Letitia Wright as Black Panther, Tenoch Huerta Mejia as Namor, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, and, of course, Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.

He’s such an incredibly bland actor. It’ll be a spacey airhead vapid ghost rider.

@c0ldR0b0t -
It'll probably be for a Midnight Sons movie that will eventually be revealed as Doctor Strange: Midnight Sons.

Doctor Strange, Clea, Blade, Ghost Rider, etc... all in a single Supernatural team-up movie.

@Scarilian - naming the 3rd Doctor Strange movie Midnight Sons may very well be the ONLY way we’ll see them on the big screen. I definitely don’t see Midnight Sons being announced on its own.

@Kiba -
I second @Hobmoblin 's reasonable question. Why not Danny? We've already had two movies with Johnny, Robbie has had his TV debut in an amazing (arguably THE best) season of AoS, so why not bring in a Rider who's had no chance to shine on screen?

@TemporarilyHere - I've been a Johnny Blaze fan for decades. I was not fan of the Nic Cage movies. The desert riding scene was awesome, but that's about all I liked.

I've waited a long time to see Johnny Blaze's Ghost Rider done right. I just want Johnny Blaze, Mephisto, Blackheart and Zarathos portrayed the way they are in the comics. Not watered down, not reinvented, just faithful to the source material.

We’re 3 hours away from the presentation. Can’t we give the rumor mill a break for a second? Making claims that are moments away from being proven true or false. Why?

@LenSpiderman - you don't like getting an early heads up on what's gonna be announced? I'd say you're prob in the minority there.

That’s literally what announcements are for. They announce things. Officially. So yeah I like to hear the announcement when it actually happens. I don’t need a heads up about what I’m about to hear.

This is a soft roll out of an unfounded guess.

Next group of films is probably going to be:

• 2028 May - Iron Man: Armor Wars (With Iron Man, War Machine, Rescue)
• 2028 July - Black Panther 3 (With Storm)
• 2028 December - X-Men (Mr. Sinister as the antagonist)

• 2029 March - Spider-man 5 (Symbiote story-line with Kraven)
• 2029 May - Nova (With Guardians of the Galaxy)
• 2029 July - Fantastic Four 2 (With Spider-man)
• 2029 October - Doctor Strange: Midnight Sons (With Blade & Ghost Rider)

Pretty much all the big hitters back to back in the hopes that the audience will come back. It's the only thing they can really do, otherwise people will leave after Doomsday/Secret Wars because they'll be out of nostalgia.

Remember a couple of SDCCs back when the rumor mill put out that crazy story that RDJ was gonna be announced as Dr Doom. How we laughed.

@ObserverIO -
It's going to be even more hilarious when they just kill off Doctor Doom in Secret Wars and then bring back RDJ as Iron Man for Armor Wars... because they are truly desperate.
BiffDitko
BiffDitko - 7/25/2026, 6:07 PM
@Scarilian - How do you know it won't end being set up for an entirely different actor to step into the role?
If SW is a soft or hard reset, who is to say it won't end in a place setting up an entire new generation of actors to step into the roles?
Scarilian
Scarilian - 7/25/2026, 6:39 PM
@BiffDitko -
They'll want RDJ around as long as they can, he'll be someone they can shove into projects for a box office boost. We've already seen their willingness to drag old actors back.

They'll want some iconic actors around:

• Deadpool: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly with Wolverine, Captain America
• Iron Man: Armor Wars with Iron Man, War Machine, Rescue
• Thor: Seige with the Young Avengers or Thunderbolts
BiffDitko
BiffDitko - 7/25/2026, 8:42 PM
@Scarilian - I mean, I've seen worse ideas.
But Feige is going long term.
RDJr will he back as Doom, but I fully expect new actors to play Tony Stark and Steve Rogers at the least.
Scarilian
Scarilian - 7/29/2026, 11:21 AM
@BiffDitko -
Doctor Doom is done at the end of Secret Wars.

RDJ's Tony Stark is going to be the Phil Coulson of the new heroes, showing up as a connective tissue.

They are still going forward with the idea that the younger Avengers characters will be the new Avengers going forward, so I wouldn't expect a new Tony Stark or Steve Rodgers.
BiffDitko
BiffDitko - 7/29/2026, 11:35 AM
@Scarilian - I REALLY don't think SW will be the last of Doom.
Technically speaking, if SW is some kind of soft reboot, someone ELSE could end up playing him.
Considering ALL of the storylines out there they could pull from it would almost be a waste.
Hell they could do something as simple as a "Books Of Doom" origin story as a D+ miniseries. They could do "Triumph & Torment" with Doom amd Strange going to HELL to rescue his beloved Mother. Sooooo many places they could go amd it wouldn't even necessarily need to be RDJr. A lot of people are saying we may end up with new actors playing Tony amd Steve, why would Doom be an exception?
Idk, maybe the fact that he is legitimately one of my all time favorite comic book characters EVER created (he inspired DARTH VADER ffs) just inspires me with hope for stuff past SW?
Either way Ive been looking forward to a Doom true to his roots for pretty much ever.
I'm happy either way.

I feel like Gosling could pull off GR even if he would not have been my first choice honestly…

Also if this the case then Eva Mendes will now be the reel and real life love of 2 Ghost Riders.
