GREEN LANTERN: Marc Guggenheim Has "A Strong Desire To Get Right What Was Done Wrong 10 Years Ago" (Exclusive)

Marc Guggenheim is best known for creating the Arrow-Verse. Building the foundation with Arrow, he ushered in a new age of superhero television as The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Black Lightning, and many other series grew together into a burgeoning multiverse, ultimately allowing fans the chance to experience the mega-crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths.

More recently, Marc has been working with Guillermo del Toro on the Tales of Arcadia franchise for DreamWorks and Netflix. In a similar fashion to the Arrow-Verse, three series were launched in the franchise called Trollhunters, Wizards, and 3-Below. Using his experience building crossovers on the CW, Marc has now helped the adventures culminate in an epic film called Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans, which hits the streamer Wednesday.

We got the chance to chat with Marc, and he had a lot to say about the new film and the franchise in general, but as talk turned to the upcoming Green Lantern series for HBO Max, we were able to touch on both the number of Arrow-verse creatives involved in the series as well as his hopes to undo the damage done by the Ryan Reynolds film a decade ago.

Literary Joe: I think you've built a great family of writers and creatives across the Arrow-Verse series, and I noticed a couple of them are going along with you to Green Lantern. For fans of the Arrow-Verse, will there be any elements of your team's creative fingerprint that people will see on HBO Max?

Marc Guggenheim: Green Lantern, we're approaching it as doing it distinct from the Arrowverse. It's not going to have any creative tendrils. But yeah, myself, Greg Berlanti, Lamont Magee, Geoff Johns, we've all got experience in the Arrowverse. I'm sure that in some way, shape, or form, the sensibilities but also a lot of lessons, we learned a lot of lessons across doing these shows both from a creative standpoint and a production standpoint. I'm sure we'll be bringing that experience to Green Lantern as we get deeper and deeper into the series.

Greg and I have worked together for 16 years now. We've worked together on a lot of different things - some DC-related, some not DC-related. He came to me years ago, now, with the idea of "DC is letting us do a Green Lantern series for their streaming service, would you want to be involved?" And, I said, of course. Because of the movie and that experience, there's a strong desire on my part and on Greg's part to get right what had been gotten wrong ten years ago.

Marc Guggenheim is back, this time to promote his upcoming film Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans. The new movie is a culmination of three DreamWorks Netflix series, Wizards, Trollhunters, and 3-Below in an Avengers-style crossover event.

While chatting with Marc, we obviously had to dig into his Legends of Tomorrow work, and we learned a lot about how the show is structured, ideas that don't always make it in the show at first, and most importantly, the upcoming Beebo Christmas Special.

We also get the opportunity to talk about the new Green Lantern series on HBO Max that Marc is handling, and he explained how grateful he is to get another crack at the Emerald Knight after his film with Ryan Reynolds didn't end up how he planned.

What do you guys think about the upcoming Green Lantern series? How would you like it to differ from the Ryan Reynolds film? Make sure to share your thoughts in the usual spot.

In the meantime, be sure to check out Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans when it releases this Wednesday, and if you haven't yet, check out a brand new clip from the new film below.

Our heroes end up in a sticky situation as they race to take down the Fire Titan! But will the combination of magic and might be enough to save the world?

I rewatched Green Lantern the other night as it was on TV and to be honest, I don't think it's as bad as it's made out to be. I hadn't seen it since it first released so I'd forgotten about most of it but compared to some more recent DC movies it's really not that bad (especially when compared to BvS, Suicide Squad and JL). The character designs and portrayals are mostly on point and the effects still stand up quite well.

I think it gets a bad rap mostly due to Ryan always making fun of it.

I will never understand how a director like Martin Campbell could mess up this movie as much as he did. He made freakin Goldeneye and Casion Royale!

The disjointed nature of the story telling and the absence of their most popular Lanterns really has this low on my expectations list. Not exactly how you make up for the film's shortcomings IMO.
