WARNING! i only had 3hr of sleep last night, woke up early to podcast and i am just typing and not checking stuff. STFU about spelling you get my drift
with all the reviews bashing this movie and a critic rating of 23/100 (as of right now from 150 reviewers) i did not expect much, it has been called things such as "Piece of shit" "Worst movie in years" "Makes Fantastic Four look amazing" and so on. I went in with a open mind and jsut wanted to see a good film with good characters.
Let me start by saying i am a BIG Green Lantern Fan, own over 400 Comics, a bunch of figures and so on. I am not gonig to hate on DC sicne Aquaman is my favorite superhero and i do like DC.
Now the movie starts and has a HUGE epic fell to it, it quickly gives you a overview of the Power of will and how and why the Green Lantern core was formed. The 1st 10 minutes of film area a absolute wonder and the high point of the film, after this its a SLOW and painfull decline into the relm of mediocrity and less wonder then established by recent films like Thor who by not even Trying has a bigger Galactic feel then this entire film.
We are quickly introduced to Abin Sur (purple dying alien as Hal puts it) & (one of my favorite Green Lanterns) and about all you see and know of him is Sinestro later on telling you how he was one of the best lanterns, but all you wil see is everything that was shown in trailers. thats about it, a total screen tiem of 2min tops. During this we also got the introduction of Paralax the entity which feeds on the power of FEAR and while donig so looks liek a giant turd swirling in my toilet after a good day at teh gym that has a high intake of protein. Its not pretty and you dont want to remember it but you watch it swirle and stay there.
jump ahead to Hal Jordan (Rayn Rynalds) act like you expect him to. He says whity lines, he makes stupid jokes and just comes off as himself. or for that matter comes off as Kyle Ryner more then anything.
The stuff between him and Carol Farris (Blake Lively) through the whole movie felt so forced and stupid i wanted to just paly Plants Vs Zombies the entier time, and there is a overkill on that aspect of the story. WE want to see the epic stuff from the trailers yet we are forced to get 3-5min bantering scnes with her trying to act and him pullnig something out of a Dance Cook joke catalogue of shame.
He gets the Ring goes to Oa and here is the best part of the film, we see the Corp members. and if you have seen the trailers thats ALL you will see of 99% of them, raise their rings and thats it. we are not introduced to Toma-Re and Kilowog who are there to Teach him to use his abbilities along with some teachnig from Sinestro (Who is by far the best preformance by a landslide)
now this is a major part of my gripe allot of peopel bitch and say Thor was unrealistic cuz he learns the ways of his wrong doing in 2 days on earth. Well Hal learns how to use his Ring and do everything within 1 training session with all 3 of the members.
then we get Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard) experiment on Abin's body he gets infected with fear and eventualy his head looks like a testicle who is suffering from a huge cae of elephantitis. He is made out to be the bad guy hee but its not really his fault or doing and waht hapen to him you cant help but feel bad for the poor shy guy who never had a chance, instead you simpothise with him (at this point 3 peopel already walked out and never came back)
The Speccial effects are a mixed bag, Oa looks good and what you see from the trailers is all you get. a tops of 15min out of 2hr is spent on the planet and you get less sence of what it looks like then you did Asgard and that was a major complaint from Thor. The Helicopter scene in perticular is so badly CG its almost like a Sci-fi original sequence. ok not that bad but its a major distraction.
The finnal battle is another big problem here, without giving away 2 much it builds up to somethnig and ends with nothing. all those lanterns and Corp members arent there. its faster and resolved in less time then the battle in Iron-Man 1 and ultimetly was predictable the moment they drop a line in the early stages of the film.
So was is good? Maybe, Was it BAD? NO! Was it AMAZING? NO would i see it again? NO chance in hell. Will i buy it? Yes cuz i love the comic book universe.
in the end, it was rushed, it had no big payoff, the characters were underdeveloped, the cg was mehh and the overall packedge was just a feeling of empty. Many have proclaimed that this is the "Star WArs of Comic book film" and you are correct it is the Star Wars Episode 2 of the films 4/10
