Green Lantern Set Video & Scene Description

Photo Update The Green Lantern movie crew are back at work in New Orleans after their brief tenure at Comic Con; follow the jump to check out filming which is currently going on for a 'mass panic' scene

The basic scene set up is this: At a Farmer's Market in Coast City (the fictional hometown of our hero, Hal Jordan), citizens are terrorized by an unknown entity that begins to sow destruction.

The extras have been spending their days running around the set screaming and acting terrified. The Farmer's Market was constructed from scratch in a New Orleans parking lot. Ryan Reynolds hasn't appeared on set yet, but this scene does involve his character facing off against the threat. This threat could be the fear entity known as Parallax, since the other villain, Hector Hammond (played by Peter Sarsgaard) hasn't been confirmed to appear in the scene.

The loudspeaker voice you hear is the film's director, Martin Campbell, who has recently returned to the New Orleans set from a brief visit to last week's San Diego Comic Con:

I remember scenes in the draft were he does cause damage around coast city. This could just be a short scene from that.

@MPP No but it had Legion, which in the script was just Parallax with a different name.

@Multi Should I read the early draft? Or will it spoil the movie?

I hope this movie is still filming on Aug 12th. I will be in New Orleans that day and would like to do a little set stalking while I am there.

@Creature - I am sure it has been changed enough that it won't spoil the movie.

You wanna know the easiest way to get extras on set to scream and run in terror...bring Christian bale onto the set. They'll be running for the hills. ;)

This has been fun to watch. I can see where they're filming all this from my office, which is about two blocks or so away. The little market has all these booths set up, as you can see in the video, and there is a little section in the middle with four or five tables set up.

They've got a helicopter flying around right now doing aerial shots of the two block area where the shooting is taking place.

Yesterday, I was watching the crowd running and screaming down the street, but NOT through the market. They were running away from a block of the street full of parked cars at all kinds of crazy angles.

There is a jackknifed gas truck parked in front of the market, that will doubtlessly get blown up in the movie. Sadly, they probably won't do it for real. That would have been cool to watch, if they could keep from setting the office building near it on fire. I'd get pictures, but I'm too far up, and I can't get any pictures where you could see anything. Also, can't get away from work during the time they're doing this to try to sneak in for a closer look.

Also cool- there is a "wrecked" red van near the corner of the first block that has some kind of controlled flame coming out of the engine compartment, and a school bus that "hit" a silver van. They had steam coming out of that van's engine area earlier.

THey have those poor extras running and screaming, and do maybe ten takes of this. It's over 100 with the heat index in the afternoon today, so those extras are earning their money!

All in all, it's only a tiny piece of the movie, but it's still fun to see how they're making it.

Could be both Hector and Parallax. Who knows? Just have to wait and see (and remain excited until then). :)

Based on the posters, i think that the Parallax entity is in Abin Sur and is transferred to Hector Hammond. At least that is what seems to happen in the trailer that they showed at con. Hammond definitely pulls something out of Abin's chest.

hey InterestingJohn I have a question for you,
I know this is super random but who can you see playing Kyle Rayner, if Campbell/Berlanti/Johns decide to bring his character in for future sequel down the road? He's my favorite Lantern and I'd just love to see him in a film.

Cool Now bring on the the trailer!! and @Intrestingjohn frickin hilarious "you know hes got some hispanic hidden in there!"lmao..=D

@InterestingJohn: Good Choice but if this came on around the time of the Matrix Keanu Reeves would be perfect but he's a little old now so I don't know.
Shaman
Shaman - 7/30/2010, 5:22 AM
Don't hate me but uh... if Kyle is supposed to be somewhat hispanic and younger than the other human lanterns, Taylor Lautner could actually pull it off. Sure he's got some ways to go talent wise but as young actors go... he's not half as bad as people make him out to be. He is part of the shittiest franchise ever created after all, so that surely doesn't help his rep.

As for Hammond, i have my fingers crossed that Campbell will pull off a better job than whoever shot the Klaus "fathead" Mensa episode in the last season of Lois & Clark! That was awefull!!!

those aerial shots are from at least two days ago. They've got the street to the right of the market full of various cars and trucks parked at all kinds of crazy angles, including a school bus that "wrecked" a silver van and a gas truck on that block and on the block towards the top of the picture. I am trying to get some pictures from up here and ground level today.

I can't believe after 10 days or so after comic con and we still don't have a footage online, wtf. It's 2010 no one was able to get footage, at this point I don't even care if it's a cheap recording lol.

UPDATE: I have pictures of the set both from the ground and from my office, which overlooks the shooting area. Who do I mail them to?

@Shaman—I'm with you... i think Lautner should at least get an audition. i'm not sure has the talent to do justice to Kyle right now, but by GL3 he'll have a couple of years more experience and his acting will surely improve... plus as much as I think I-John has an arguably more solid choice in Prinze, i'm concerned that he's getting a bit old for the part.

Rayner is also listed at 5'11" so he should be the shortest of the human Lanterns... Prinze is 6'1", while Lautner is 5'10" (and much more solidly built).
Dynamo
Dynamo - 7/30/2010, 4:50 PM
I think Justin Long would make a fine Kyle Rayner. But my top choice, Joseph Gorden-Levit ;)
AlternateNo4
AlternateNo4 - 7/30/2010, 5:16 PM
@Dynamo—you, know, ever since InterestingJohn told me that Kyle was based on keanu reeves, i've thought the same thing. people keep saying JG-L looks like heath ledger, but every time he speaks i see reeves-with-more-talent.

he just seems a bit slim for kyle, who is usually drawn as being pretty bulky. however, im not quite sure WHY rayner is so muscled, since he's supposed to have been a starving artist prior to being chosen... so if we fans could deal with a slimmer hero, i'd say he'd be terrific.
Dynamo
Dynamo - 7/30/2010, 5:37 PM
I always thought Kyle SHOULD be slimmer. Like you said he's an artist not a Test Pilot or a Marine or a even football player like Gardner.
Plus I would take Levitt over Lautner and Prinze Jr. anyday. Come on guys really? I'm all for giving guys chances be we're talking the best candidates possible.
These are the guys that played Sharkboy and Fred from Scooby-Doo.
Hell i'd rather take Shia LaBeouff...

AlternateNo4 - 7/30/2010, 10:02 PM
no, not shia... but what about the guy that played his roommate? ramon rodriguez... hmm sounds moderately latino to me!
