More from Director Martin Campbell on Green Lantern

While promoting his new film, Edge of Darkness, director Martin Campbell discussed some of the Green Lantern movie rumors!

Director Martin Campbell has been making headlines on an almost daily basis, and it's not for his new film Edge of Darkness, starring Mel Gibson. Campbell has been speaking quite a bit about one of fandom's most highly-anticipated comic book movies: Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds.

Rebecca Murray of About.com recently caught up with Campbell and asked him about some of the rumored characters and plot details that have been circulating about Green Lantern.

Many believe that there will be two (or more) villains facing off against Hal Jordan/Green Lantern--Hector Hammond and Sinestro--but Campbell said that's not true:

"No, no, no, no, no. Don't listen to that nonsense."

And, when pressed about the plot, Campbell referred back to an earlier statement that he made about the Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn mini-series:

"Well, I'll tell you what. Get the origin story, read that, and you'll be pretty much on target. Well, you know, it varies slightly. But [the movie is] pretty much the origin story of Green Lantern."

Besides Reynolds, the only other Green Lantern cast member confirmed at this time is Blake Lively in the role of Carol Ferris, Hal's boss and love interest. Campbell has said that he is in negotiations with Mark Strong (Lord Blackwood in Sherlock Holmes) for the role of Sinestro, and Peter Sarsgaard is supposedly in talks to play the villainous Dr. Hector Hammond.

Green Lantern opens June 17, 2011!

It sounds like to me that Martin Campbell is getting annoyed with the reporters and rumors from the way he answered those questions.

Well, I've heard that Geoff Johns' "Secret Origins" story is going to be an influence on the movie (also "Emerald Dawn" too) and I can definitely say that if they used SO at all it will be a great origin movie. SO was awesomesauce.

I can not wait for the first pics of Reynolds in costume.

And I'm so glad they got Mark Strong for Sinestro. They really got me back into their good graces, after the Lively casting, with that one.

If Hector Hammond is the main villain, doesn't that mean the majority of the film will take place on Earth?

Lee: I know it'll be a lot of ED, but I'm pretty sure they're going to throw plenty of SO stuff in there.

I love both stories, I like that ED made Hal fallible and I like that SO made him the cocky "bar-fighter" type of character. I think a blend of both stories would be best.

Hal will be the only Earth GL in the movie. If they ever let more of those guys in, it'll be a while. I'm sure they don't want to confuse the mortals......

I agree with you Anil Rickly, that would be a great way to lead into what would be a successful sequel. This movie in my opinion has an opportunity to actually separate itself from a lot of the other superhero stories, but its vital that the script kick ass and the special effects blow our minds. (CHEERS TO THE SONY EFFECTS TEAM!!!)
