When Yahoo! Movies asked James Gunn if Groot is invincible as long as he stays in water, the Guardians of the Galaxy director said, "That’s an unanswered question: Is Baby Groot, Groot? Or is Baby Groot actually Groot’s progeny?" He then said it's exactly like "how if a nut falls off a tree and then its seed eventually grows a new tree, those are two different trees." "It may be answered in the future, but that’s the question," teased Gunn, adding that we'll have to "wait and see" if Groot looks exactly the same when he grows up in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. What do you think?

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014

Gunn on why there isn't enough baby Groot toys:

“While we were still shooting the movie, I brought up putting Dancing Baby Groot out as a toy,” he said. “The reason it didn’t happen is because you have some control in the film industry over secrets getting out there, but the people you don’t have much control over are the toy people, unfortunately. Those toy designs get out, always! And people definitely would have gotten ahold of the Baby Groot if we had started manufacturing it in time for it to come out after the movie, so that was the biggest reason we didn’t push on that particular element.”

Well, that's the important thing. "After release", when everyone already saw or heard about it.

We knew Groot would "die" because of the comics but we didn't knew we would se a baby Groot dancing. And just like he said, toys are always revealed before release.

Yeah, @AsgardianHobo -- guess the "dance" theme throughout the entire movie wasn't intentional and just a Disneyfication...geezus, give it up people...the dance references and dancing itself is obviously part of the charm of this movie (like it or not) plus, remember, you read f.ucking COMIC BOOKS!

He is Groot!!
Anyone who has tread the comics knows that the regrowth is just a regenerated Groot. I'm curious to see if they continue that or change it up, making it his progeny.

It's got to be Groot, don't change it that will be horrible. I want to see Rocket and Groot continue, and shift the other people on the roster.
