Find Out Which Marvel Characters James Gunn Couldn't Use In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

We've given one away in the thumbnail (and you might well guess the others since the director has expressed his fondness for them in the past), but during a recent podcast Gunn reveals that he really wanted to use certain characters in GOTG but couldn't because of rights issues.

Given the fact that there have been two team incarnations with various members in the comics, there were several character combinations James Gunn and Marvel could have settled on for Guardians Of The Galaxy -- but it turns out there might have been a couple of additions (replacements?) to the final team if only Marvel held the rights. Bug (aka "Galactic Warrior") began as one of the Micronauts before joining the second GOTG team, and Gunn has mentioned previously that he likes the character a lot. Likewise, Rom: Spaceknight, who actually started out as a toy before starring in his own cosmic comic series. While chatting to The Movie Crypt podcast, the directer admits that these guys probably would have made the cut if he had his way, along with The Badoon, who would have replaced the Sakaaran as "canon fodder". Here's what he had to say about all of this in full.

"There's characters that I've been interested in that I'm not allowed to use but I won't go so far as to say I definitely would have had them. There was a really good chance Bug was going to show up in the first movie but we do not own him... but, anyway, that was going to happen, perhaps. Listen, I really love Rom: Spaceknight, as everyone at Marvel knows because they've given me Rom stuff... but we don't own Rom. I would love for Rom: Spaceknight to show up because I love his story, I love the way he looks, I love everything about him... There are other characters, but basically, some characters we can work around and we can use. Listen, I wanted to use the Badoon, but the Badoon we don't own... they're really interesting. They would be like the cannon fodder guys who were like the Sakaaran in my movie... I wrote them as Badoon but I just did a search-replace-Sakaaran when I found out we didn't have Badoon. It was strangely late in the process when I found that out. They were designed as Badoon."

Doesn't sound like there's much hope those lads will show up in the sequel either, but there's always Quasar and Adam Warlock! Would you have liked to see Bug and Rom fight alongside Star Lord and co. in the movie?
