GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Concept Art Shows Alternate Designs For The Legendary Star-Lord And Drax The Destroyer

In this latest batch of concept art from Guardians of the Galaxy, we put the spotlight on some awesome alternate (and comic accurate) designs for fan-favourite characters Star-Lord and Drax. Check it out!

Before Guardians of the Galaxy was released, Star-Lord and company were definitely considered an obscure bunch of characters even by the most hardcore comic book fans. That all changed in 2014, though, and the movie altered the landscape of the Marvel Cinematic Universe forever.

In our latest look back at some concept art from the James Gunn helmed release, we put the spotlight on alternate designs for both Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and Drax (Dave Bautista). When Marvel Studios revealed that very first piece of artwork for the movie many moons ago at Comic-Con, the team had a very different look and these alternate designs are very much based on that aesthetic.

Drax, meanwhile, looks just like Jason Momoa in some of these pieces (a few of which we don't think have been online before now).

I hate how basic they made Star-Lord's outfit, also making the red so prominent with his jacket. There's too much red on most characters already, and my eyes felt it (as I anticipated) when he ended up with Stark, Strange and Spidey in Infinity War. Wasn't enough variety.

one on the left is my favorite, if they had gone with a more traditional take on the team, this would have been the prefect design, doesnt fit with the rag tag team of misfits style

@dracula - I'm pretty much a fan of the original star Lord look from the 70s, but I don't think it would fit in tonally with what Gunn was gunning for (see what I did there :-) that star Lord was basically a loner

@IcemanX - yeah man! I don’t NOT like Pratt’s Red Look...but I LOVE these early concepts.

But it just goes to show you. GOTG doesn’t HAVE to be Cosmic Goofy. With a different director/different studio values...it could be radically rebooted into something else. As seen by these concept drawings.

I'd love to see Starlord get the blue makeover with the iconic helmet. I also really like the idea of Drax having a little armor or something on his arms and torso like the last two pics.

So, they were originally considering casting Christopher Lloyd as Drax?:🤣

I mean, they're cool designs, but they look more like they belong to a gritty GOTG inspired video game rather than the quirky comedy movie we got. I do hope costume designs in Vol 3 take a few queues from these concepts though, such as making Star Lord's jacket more blue (keep some red for a sense of visual continuity though), and they could get away with giving Drax a tiny bit of armour and different weapons and stuff too.

Too bad Drax is not tough or cool in any way, all for the sake of additional comedic relief, such a bummer

I enjoy the gotg movies a lot but I also like them less than any other mcu movie.
It had heart, great comedic moments and character interactions but James gunn dropped the ball on the Nova corps, the power level of all the characters, Gamora and drax not really living up their titles, deadliest woman in the galaxy.... Please, quake with no powers could knock her out, not having Adam warlock which I'm fine with now cause he'd probably stuff him up. It's not much but still irks me whenever I watch them.

Looking at this concepts, it would have made perfect sense to have Peter wearing that look, as probably any kid who can travel across the galaxy would do, like "i'm an outlaw, i have this gadgets, i'm a fricking superheroe!!", while everyone else look at him like "dude...wtf is he wearing?" XD
Idk, i think that would add more to the character.
