James Gunn On Star-Lord Discovering That A Freakin' Planet Is His Father In GOTG Vol. 2

Director James Gunn teases how Star-Lord will first react to learning that Ego the Living Planet is his father in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, as his parentage will be a key element.

In a new report on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, USA Today got the scoop from director/writer James Gunn that Peter Quill's parentage will be at the forefront of the sequel.  When Star-Lord eventually learns that his father is Ego the Living Planet (played by Kurt Russell), his reaction will be about what you would expect from the narcissistic hero.

"
It runs the gamut of emotions for him, wanting to understand why his father wasn’t around to quickly idolizing him and ultimately learning the reality of the relationship and comparing the man who sired him to the man who raised him."

It seems that Yondu may have a bit of jealousy concerning his adoptive son growing closer to his biological father.  However, when the casting call for the role was first circulating during the early stage's of the film, the role of Ego the Living Planet was designated the villain of the pic.  With Elizabeth Debicki's Ayesha, Karen Gillan's Nebula and Chris Sullivan's Taserface it will be interesting to see if that's actually the case and whether any upcoming trailers and set reports will clearly establish one of these characters as the primary antagonist.

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Also, someone help me out here. Remeber when they showed Drax talking to Ego in some comic con footage (something about his penis)? Well, it bugs me that I NEVER read any transcript of that scene, like, how was Ego portrayed? No one ever talks about it.

@ODanil - I'm pretty sure he was in human form at least in that scene. What he looked like, however, I don't think was described too much anywhere :/

Think it will definitely be a Wizard of Oz style man behind a machine.

@SimplyAz - Doubt it. That ain't Ego and that would poss off everyone who follows the comics.

Ego can control the evolution of life on himself so it makes sense that he creates surrogate bodies for himself to inhabit temporarily. We will definitely get the Giant Face Planet with a Mustache and Goatee.

To see what we are in for with Ego check out this FF episode from the 90s. From the Baby Groot bomb scene in the trailer you can already tell it will be similar with the whole "let's nuke the brain of the planet" thing.

Didn't GOTG say Peter belonged to an ancient race? Are there others like Ego in the MCU?

Off-topic. Watched Source Code last night and really really liked it. Moon was good, but Source Code was the movie that just put me on the Duncan Jones fan train. And it just reinforced my desire to see Gyllenhaal play Reed Richards in an MCU Fantastic Four. And now I'd love to see Jones direct it, as well.

@Spock0Clock - Correct. Moon was good

@Spock0Clock - I'm a big fan of both Source Code and Moon, but I disagree with Jones directing a big franchise movie, his small movies are great, but Warcraft was a big disappointment. He should stick to interesting original films.

@Spock0Clock -

I like Duncan Jones, and absolutely loved Moon and thought Source Code was a good film.

Looking forward to Mute.

@Spock0Clock - Jones is great. Source Code is criminally underrated and I think its a sci fi classic.

It seems like a stupid idea but I'm sure Gunn have a surprise for us. I'm more concerned about the villain, Ronan was a waste of a very interesting character.
