Netflix has released the first trailer for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, which is a completely separate show to Masters of the Universe: Revelation.

While Kevin Smith's recent revival of the classic '80s animated series was more adult-oriented in tone, it looks like this CG take on the material was developed with younger kids in mind. Revelation also took the established mythology in a bold new direction, but based on what we see here, this show is going to be more of a complete reinvention.

The series will be produced by Mattel Television, with Adam Bonnett, Christopher Keenan, and Revelation's Rob David on board as executive producers.

"Masters of the Universe is one of the most iconic global franchises of all time, with a 30-year history and a passionate fan base," said Fred Soulie, Mattel's Senior VP of Content Distribution and Business Development. "The entire team at Mattel is excited to introduce the world of He-Man to a new generation and, together with the talented team at Netflix, to reimagine the classic characters in a way that appeals to kids and families today, while also resonating with the fans who grew up with them."

On the planet of Eternia, a young lost prince discovers the powers of Grayskull and transforms into He-Man, Master of the Universe! The classic battle between He-Man and evil Skeletor rages to new heights as both hero and villain forge new and mighty teams. A new generation of heroes fighting for the fate of us all. In the end, who will become MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE?

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe arrives on Netflix on September 16.

I really enjoyed what Smith did with the franchise. I loved MotU as a child but lets face it, as an adult that show is a goofy, 30-minute toy commercial of steroidal people chasing a purple skeleton man with enemies like "Stinkor" and "Clawful."

Smith tried to appeal to today's more sophisticated audiences by providing some depth, character development and arcs. It may not be perfect in every regard but it's definitely the right evolution for a series like He-Man and highly entertaining. 👍

@Humperdink - I've never seen anything from MotU, nor did I have any toys or whatsoever, so Smith's show was the first real exposure for me to the franchise. And for me, he made it work (even though I kinda wanted to see more of Adam, because that also was an interesting character)

@Humperdink - There was nothing sophisticated about it, especially the end of the first show. Teela basically said, [frick] you, your feelings and your dead kid. I'm the real victim here because I was lied to. Now excuse me while I become a caricature of an over emotional female and make your tragedy about me.

At some point, when you start to age, you'll look back on your favorite childhood cartoon franchises and realize they are all mindless 30 minute toy commercials with no plot, depth, or purpose beyond merchandizing.

It's great when you're 8, but if you look at those shows now as an adult in the exact same way, you're in a sad state of arrested development.

@YonnyLayna - The sad thing is TMNT had an unbelievably good comic series before the old-school animated series came along. And that children's comical take obviously made them tons of money and became the norm for the franchise. But damn it, what I wouldn't give for a more violent, adult TMNT movie.

@YonnyLayna - Not as obvious maybe, but still so. I love every franchise you just listed; but they are still products intended to sell me something. Like @Humperdink said, the older I get the more I realize it; doesn’t take away the passion I had for it, or the passion some creators put into it. A big revelation for me was Shadows Of The Empire.

To me, it was just the next chapter in the Star Wars story. Or maybe the hidden chapter. Everything lined up, & it just felt natural to me. I don’t ever remember hearing it be called a “media event.” But now, looking at commercials on YouTube, & look back videos, I see it as the marketing campaign it was. A stop gap to keep Star Wars relevant, without a tentpole film at the center. As an adult, what an amazing business feat!

Doesn’t take away what I feel about it & those characters.

It does let me see changes to franchises like MOTU with tolerance. You don’t have to love every single aspect of Revelation to be a “real fan” or not. I appreciate the art, animation, & most of the character design. I also agree that Revelation takes the characters to real personal traits, while not shying away from their ridiculous origins. Orko & Evil Lyn were my favorites for this reason. I loved their scenes together, & felt like they got the spotlight they never had.

I'm not even a fan of MOTU and thought it was really cheap and lame even when I was younger.

The meme is more of an overall response to franchises like Star Wars etc that have been run into the ground over time imo.

To follow up Revelations with this is such a huge step backwards... this looks like such crap. They should have just put the money from both shows into Smith show and turned it into an ongoing series instead of a limited series.

I think this looks fun! It looks joyous! It looks happy! It put a smile on my face. After only being able to get through two episodes of Kevin Smith's interpretation, this feels like a breath of fresh air. Yes, it's clearly a kid's show. But so was the original. And yes, it's different. But at least it's building on the Universe instead of tearing it down and starting from scratch. I will binge watch this show on a Saturday morning while sitting cross legged on the floor and eating Frosted Flakes in front of the tv like it was meant to be watched and enjoy the hell outta myself!

It looks like a Fortnite/Overwatch expansion pack.... but after watching the trailer a few times, I hate to say it, but I'm actually intrigued to watch it.
