Masters Of The Universe: Original He-Man Actor Noah Centineo Explains Why He Stepped Away From The Movie

Before Travis Knight took over as director of a new live-action take on Masters of the Universe for Amazon MGM Studios, the Nee Brothers (Adam and Aaron) were set to helm an earlier incarnation of the movie at Sony Pictures.

Black Adam and Street Fighter star Noah Centineo had been cast as Prince Adam/He-Man in this version, but ultimately stepped away. Nicholas Galitzine later took over as Eternia's muscle-bound protector when the project landed at MGM.

Now, Centineo has finally revealed details of what went down when he was still attached to star, and why he ultimately decided to bid farewell to He-Man.

It turns out that Centineo came very close to shooting the movie (he even tried on the costume), but chose not to stick around for what sounds like a significantly different take on the material.

"For a moment there, I was – I guess we can talk about this – was going to do He-Man,” Centineo told host Josh Horowitz during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “There was He-Man before Black Adam. And that didn’t [work out].”

“We were pretty close, dude,” he went on. “I went through the test process. We screen tested loincloth and stuff. All of it … I signed the contract. They’re like showing us, you know, previs. They’re showing us kind of the production design, the world building. At the time it was the Nee Brothers that were going to do it … and we got pretty close. And then, for some reason or another, it just pushed and pushed.”

Centineo recalled that the creative team “wanted to keep tweaking it and tweaking it and the contract ran out. And we moved on,” he said. “And then I think Netflix acquired it for a little bit, and then Amazon acquired it and they found [Nicholas Galitzine].”

Despite losing out on the role, Centineo was full of praise for Galitzine’s performance.

"It’s so difficult to step into a role like that dude. I mean, that’s not an easy movie to make at all. And like, I watched it and Nick is incredible. Like people don’t understand how hard it is to do camp wholeheartedly. If the movie works [or] the movie doesn’t work, oftentimes, especially in that situation, I don’t blame him for that. I loved what he was doing, what he was trying to do.”

MOTU was met with a mostly positive reception from critics, and fans of the classic cartoon seemed to embrace the colourful, comedic adaptation. Even so, the movie tanked at the box office, making a sequel unlikely.

Centineo is set to play Ken Masters in the upcoming Street Fighter movie.

"Because why would anyone want to work with a wanky little nonce like Jared Leto" should have been the answer.

@ArthurFuchsache - This was before Leto, so that's not the reason.

@ArthurFuchsache - lol fair…

I will say though that Leto as Skeletor was the highlight of the film imo which is a sentence I thought I would never say.

@Irregular - Leto’s been a creep at least to my knowledge for the better part of a decade now

@Madein93 - Regardless, when Noah Centineo signed up for He-Man, Jared Leto was not involved at all with that iteration is the point.

I think it worked out, the movie was surprisingly fun and Galitzine was good.

@BrainySleep - Agreed. 3rd act dragged a little bit but it was a litte nice fantasy film.

@Fogs - Yeah I agree about the 3rd act dragging, probably my one real issue with it.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 8/21/2026, 9:28 AM
@RolandD - I must have missed most of those. If you mean the Skeletor stuff, I think that was meant to be more evil and flamboyant than “gay”
RolandD

@Bucky74 - Adam wears pink and lavender and He-Man wears a leather harness. : "You can pretend to be the hero, with your giant muscles, the big long sword dangling between your glorious thighs..." Sure. Nothing gay at all about that.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 8/22/2026, 11:16 PM
@RolandD - Adam always wore pink, that’s He Man’s outfit, and Skeletor is pure flamboyant evil. Gay is a stretch though

I think seeing Centineo’s take with the Nee Brothers at the helm could have been interesting but I thought the version we got with Travis Knight & Nicholas Galitzine was enjoyable overall (the brothers still have story & screenplay credit so I could see enough of their ideas remaining in the final version to get that)…

I will say that I think Nicholas Galitzine was a better choice then Centineo for the role of Adam/He-Man since he brought this likability and a bit of goofball energy to the role while being able to be the noble , compassionate yet strong character aswell.

My hope for the "John Rambo" film is that it will lead into a remake of "First Blood" that uses THE ORGINAL NOVEL.
Man, that book is sooooo much better than the movie, amd the movie is a CLASSIC. But John Rambo in Morrel's "First Blood" would take out Stallone's Rambo in a f***ing HEARTBEAT.
In the movie Rambo doesn't kill ANYONE ON PURPOSE. He hits that dude in a head with a ROCK and he falls out of the helicopter. In the NOVEL "First Blood" Rambo kills HUNDREDS of people, easily. Civilians also. He's also completely INSANE. I can't recommend that book enough. One of my favorites.

Nicholas Galitzine was perfect casting. People wanna act like this movie wasn't supposed to be a goofy Saturday morning cartoon? IT WAS PERFECT FOR THAT REASON ALONE

movie was fine. I personally felt that the writing/dialogue was the weakest part, the attempts at humor usually came off as forced and pretty dated. But visuals were great, the casting was good, action was good.

@HeavyMetal4Life - yeah , the humor was hit or miss for but as you said , I enjoyed the other elements you mentioned.

Special shout out to the music too , that main theme was great!!
