American Horror Story has extended its reservation. FX renewed Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's horror anthology for a 14th season on Tuesday, October 20, one week before AHS: 13 checks out with its October 29 finale.
Deadline broke the news, and TVLine, The Hollywood Reporter and UPI followed. FX has not announced a premise, setting, cast or premiere date for the new season.
The First Pickup Since 2020
This is the show's first renewal in nearly seven years. FX's last order came in January 2020, when the network committed to Seasons 11, 12 and 13 in a single batch. That deal ran out with the current season, and plenty of fans had started treating AHS: 13 as a possible farewell tour.
Murphy had already pushed back on that idea. "Season 13 is not the end; I'm working on season 14 as we speak," he told The Hollywood Reporter over the summer. Tuesday's announcement made it official.
How AHS: 13 Has Performed
According to Deadline, the AHS: 13 premiere landed on Nielsen's Streaming Top 10 and became Murphy's biggest series launch on Hulu and Disney+. FX has not released full-season viewership totals.
The library was heating up before the premiere, too. Nielsen reported that Hulu viewers streamed 623 million minutes of American Horror Story in August 2026, the franchise's biggest month since AHS: Delicate wrapped. Coven and Murder House led all installments, each topping 1.1 billion minutes on Hulu between May 2024 and August 2026.
FX also has its own numbers to point to. The network says the series has generated more than 2 billion hours of engagement since its 2011 debut. The show has collected more than 100 Emmy nominations and 17 wins, and it holds the title of longest-running hour-long series in FX history.
The Season 13 Reunion
AHS: 13 premiered September 24 and plays like a franchise reunion, pulling characters and storylines from nearly all 12 previous seasons. Murphy has described it as "like the Avengers," and like any good Avengers lineup, this one includes a few members who didn't stay dead.
The plot puts the devil one step from winning a bet with God. If he survives 100 years in a human body, he collects Earth, Heaven and Hell, and characters from across the anthology have banded together to stop him.
Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters lead a returning cast that also includes Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe and Leslie Grossman. Lange's return has drawn particular attention given her history with Constance Langdon, Sister Jude Martin, Fiona Goode and Elsa Mars.
Fifteen Years of Moving House
Murphy and Falchuk launched the series on FX in 2011 with Murder House. Since then, the anthology has checked into an asylum, a coven, a freak show, a hotel, a cult and a summer camp, with a mostly rotating ensemble playing new characters each time.
That format is also why nobody can predict Season 14 yet. The next installment could introduce an entirely new story or keep revisiting the characters AHS: 13 brought back. FX hasn't said which way Murphy is leaning, and no casting has been confirmed, though any of the current regulars could return.
What's Next
Episodes 11 and 12 air tonight, Thursday, October 22, at 9 p.m. ET on FX. The finale follows on Thursday, October 29, two days before Halloween. New episodes also stream on Hulu, which carries the earlier seasons in the U.S.
Season 14 details will come later. For now, the devil has two more Thursdays to win his bet.
Should Season 14 build a brand-new nightmare from scratch, or keep the AHS: 13 reunion going?
