For those recall, a
Friday the 13th video game was
confirmed to be in development several months ago. Although the game has taken a considerable leap forward, developers
Gun Media and
Illfonic need your help to make this project a reality. Despite
Friday the 13th having received widespread success as a horror film franchise, spanning from the 1980 original, 10 sequels, a reboot and a second reboot set for a 2016 release, there has never been a particularly well received
Friday the 13th video game. As a matter of fact, the last
Friday the 13th video game, released in 1989, is often considered to be one of the worst NES video games of all time.
Gun Media and Illfonic look to change the franchise's status in the medium with a 1v7 third person, asymmetrical multiplayer title that allows you the chance to play as iconic slasher, Jason Voorhees, as you hunt down your friends, who will be playing as the immature teenage campers that are unfortunate enough to reside at Camp Crystal Lake. We're not talking about the Jason Voorhees that appeared in the much maligned 2009 reboot, nor are we talking about the version of the character that will appear in the 2016 reboot. You will have the chance to play as Jason in classic, mid-1980s fashion.
According to the official release,
"It's a classic horror fan's dream, no shaky cam, no found footage. We want you to know we're revitalizing the golden age era of slashers, and putting you at the controls of each horrific, blood-splattered moment. Friday the 13th is the definition of horror to the millions of fans around the world. A masked killer going after the young and vulnerable; it grabs at our attention, it frightens us, and yet we all come back for more. Friday the 13th: The Game will give you the feeling of horror and dread that you expect from Jason Voorhees. This will be the ultimate asymmetrical horror experience unlike anything you've ever seen - a title we're proud to introduce that is worthy of the name 'Friday the 13th.'"
Additionally,
Friday the 13th co-creator Sean Cunningham is involved with the project. Kane Hodder, who portrayed Jason Voorhees in the
Friday the 13th films from the late '80s and early '90s, will reprise his role as the character via motion capture. Fan favourite character Tommy Jarvis, the protagonist of
Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter,
Friday the 13th Part V, and
Friday the 13th Part VI, will make his first appearance in decades in the video game. The voice of Jason's mother, Pamela Voorhees, can be heard in the game's announcement trailer.
