ARMY OF THE DEAD Sequel Officially Titled PLANET OF THE DEAD; Zack Snyder Teases Dieter's Return

Army of the Dead director Zack Snyder has confirmed that the sequel will be titled Planet of the Dead, teasing that Dieter may have somehow survived the events of that explosive first movie. Check it out!

Zack Snyder is currently doing the rounds to promote Army of Thieves, a prequel to zombie movie Army of the Dead. However, the undead aren't expected to factor into the heist movie; instead, we'll learn more about German safecracker Ludwig Dieter and what led to him becoming known as the best of the best in his field (it arrives on Netflix tomorrow).

We're certainly intrigued by the project, but what about a sequel to Army of the Dead?

During a recent interview with Inverse, Snyder confirmed that it will be titled Planet of the Dead while hinting that Dieter somehow survived being taken by Zeus after he locked Vanderohe inside that vault.

"The real adventure would be to see what happened to him when that safe door closed. Did he get killed by Zeus or not? What happened? We don't see him die on camera, and there's still some time left," the filmmaker teased. "I won't tell you what happens in Army of the Dead 2 — aka Planet of the Dead — but let's just say that there’s a chance Dieter survives. And there's a chance that brush with death would have caused him to want to find a jailed Gwendoline."

Snyder does tend to play fast and loose with continuity, and often retcons key moments or character decisions in response to what fans want. Still, we'd definitely enjoy seeing more of Dieter in Planet of the Dead, especially as the virus was clearly about to spread across Earth at the end of AOTD

Elsewhere in the interview, the director shared his thoughts on the recent trailer for The Batman. "I really loved [it]," he said. "I think Matt [Reeves] is doing a great job with it. It's right up my alley as far as the tone and I just feel so super, super happy. Super good."

It's got to sting that Warner Bros. is making the sort of dark, R-Rated movie set in the DC Extended Universe he always wanted to. Still, Snyder is busy expanding this zombie universe for Netflix, and we'll hopefully learn more about plans for Planet of the Dead in the not too distant future.

Movie was a huge missed opportunity. Had a fun concept that they failed to do anything interesting or new with

Peter Washington once said "When there's no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the Earth."

With this title, the dead will not only walk the earth, they will conquer it.

Thought the first one was garbage I can't imagine this will be much better... but at the end of the die I'm a zombie fan so I'll probably get to watching it eventually.

The first one had so much potential, but was all wasted on being cool moments that just didn't work. I doubt we'll get an answer to it, but for example why the [frick] were there cyborg zombies?

I'd assume that Dieter will be the main character of the franchise given Schweighöfer's popularity among fans.
God for Zack to get his own franchise at Netflix, also love to hear that he seems to be in good faith about Matt Reeves.

So basically they killed off Dieter, then realized how popular he was, and now he's not only getting a prequel series, but also survived the film so he can return for the sequel? Laughable.

Zack Snyder not hiring Ray Fisher again is suspect.

It was just a conspiracy to get rid of the better director to direct an ensemble film. Whedon was JUST an asshole, how is he cancelled?

The movie had a shitload of scenes that were just a copy of Aliens.

However I did enjoy it and look forward to the sequel.

@marvel72 - Well, there where 2 floating lights up in the sky in the begin of the movie that zoomed off and then there were scenes with that zombie with the metal skull and a glowing, blue, electronic eyes, maybe alien technology?

This movie was not good. The character development was so cringe. They revealed the "double agent" so early that it killed the plot twist. The only decent part was the montage at the beginning that was so gratuitously gory that it was humorous.

How TF would he have survived that nuke, Snyder?

I get he's trying to tease the new heist film like "you should care about this character and wonder about his background, even though this is a prequel story for a character that almost certainly died"

Army of the Dead was a terrible story, and Snyder is a terrible architect for a cinematic universe. He's really bad at adapting original stories, and he never thinks about any story beat or world-building decision beyond "hey, this would be cool"

That title sequence to army of the dead should have been the movie, not what we got. Hopefully we get more cgi characters, out of focus shots and dead pixels!

I had issues with the ending but I enjoyed it overall as a silly zombie movie with some fun ideas. I liked that they were doing something different with zombie lore and wanted to know more about it even if the story itself and some of the logic leaps at the end were weak to me. Not sold on that prequel releasing this week but I’m excited for this 🤷🏽‍♂️

First movie was garbage, but Matthias Schweighöfer would be a killer Booster Gold.

I don't want to see any army of the dead or planet or galaxy or toast of the dead ever again.
