BOX OFFICE: GODZILLA Stomps On CAPTAIN AMERICA For Largest Opening Day; May Hit $100M
After taking $38.5 million on Friday, Godzilla has managed to take the title from Captain America: The Winter Soldier to have 2014's highest opening day. It also looks set to have the highest opening weekend with analysts now predicting a haul of $98+ million!
$65 million. That's what it was initially believed Godzilla would open with in North America. Well, if you needed any further proof of how unreliable tracking can be and how unpredictable moviegoers are, look no further than what's happening this weekend! After earning a whopping $38.5 million on Friday, Gareth Edwards' remake scored the highest opening day of 2014, and it now looks likely to beat both Captain America: The Winter Soldier's three-day debut of $95 million and The Amazing Spider-Man 2's $91.6 million. With a B+ CinemaScore, business on IMAX screens is also particularly good, and a total of $98 - 100 million by close of business on Sunday is now extremely likely. Business overseas is going very well too. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 took $4.5 million on Friday for a $16 million weekend. That will give it a total of $171.4 million.
