DEMONIC Director Neill Blomkamp Unveils The First Footage From His New Supernatural Horror Film

Neill Blomkamp hasn't helmed a major feature since 2015's divisive Chappie (you can find out about his now defunct Aliens sequel here), but the District 9 director is back with a new horror movie called Demonic, and we have a first look at some unnerving footage.

Filmed during the pandemic, the mysterious supernatural thriller focuses on "a young woman who unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades old rift between mother and daughter are revealed."

"The main character is a girl whose been estranged from her mother," Blomkamp explained to EW in a recent interview. "During the course of the film she gets sort of reunited with her mother and we learn about some crazy back story that she wasn't aware of. I would say it has a crossover between science fiction and horror."

The filmmaker decided to go with a cast comprised of lesser-known actors he either admired or had worked with in the past, including Carly Pope (Elysium), Chris William Martin (The Age of Adaline, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, The Vampire Diaries), and Michael Rogers (Siren, The Blacklist, Supernatural).

"The cast was a group of people who I really like, everything coming from this feeling of wanting to get people to together and shoot something that we were in control of. It made me look through the catalog of actors that I had worked with [on] our experimental Oats Studios YouTube stuff. I worked with Carly Pope on a few Oats pieces so I immediately thought she would be great for female lead. It was a pretty cool close-knit group of friends working on something."

Check out a brief teaser for Demonic below, and be sure to check back tomorrow for the full trailer.

Not the biggest fan of supernatural or horror, but I'm giving this a chance because of Blomkamp. His movies are not the greatest, but always have intriguing concepts

@bkmeijer - District 9 was the only one of his that was pretty great.

@NewAtrocitus3 - okay yeah D9 was great. Elysium and Chappie less so, but still made solid attempts at some cool ideas (Hugh Jackman with a mullet not included)

Was starting to think Blomkamp was a one trick pony after Chappie. This looks interesting tho.

I never understood why people didn't like Elysium and Chappie. I rewatched them both over lockdown and really enjoyed them.

@rexlincoln - same. I did enjoy both of the movies. love to see matt Damon doing some futuristic cyberpunk character in Elysium.
