Geena Davis Explains Why She Won't Return As Barbara Maitland For BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE

Most of the principal cast of Tim Burton's Beetlejuice will return for the upcoming sequel, but Geena Davis will not be among them. The actress explains why in a new interview...

Though Michael Keaton's titular Ghost with the Most was obviously the main attraction in Tim Burton's horror comedy classic, Beetlejuice, the protagonists were actually Adam and Barbara Maitland (played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis).

The recently married couple are killed in a car accident in the first few minutes of the movie, and their displaced spirits wind up summoning Betelgeuse in an effort to drive the new owners of their house (Winona Ryder's Lydia Deetz and her family) away. Things don't exactly go according to plan, however.

Ultimately, Betelgeuse is banished, and the Deetzs and Maitlands agree to share the house.

Keaton, Ryder and Catherine O'Hara (who plays Lydia's mother) will reprise their roles for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, but Baldwin and Davis won't be back. While speaking to ET, the latter explained why it wouldn't make sense for her character to return.

"No, I’m not. I’m not in the remake Oh, you were expecting that I would be? Yeah, no, you know what? Because my theory is that ghosts don’t age … Not that I have.”

“Our characters were stuck the way they looked when they died forever, so it’s been a while, it’s been a minute,” Davis went on. "I heard the trailer came out and somebody said they were crying, so I have to see the trailer.”

It's hard to argue with the logic. Betelgeuse is also a ghost, of course, but the bio-exorcists's freakish appearance allows Keaton to basically disappear behind the makeup.

It's a shame Davis won't be a part of the sequel, though, and it remains to be seen if Barbara and Adam get a mention (we'd assume their spirits are simply supposed to have moved on to the afterlife).

You can have another look at the teaser trailer below.

"After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return to the small Vermont town of Winter River. Paranormal empath, Lydia Deetz, begins to see the lecherous demon Beetlejuice, who haunted her as a teenager. His plans to finally marry Lydia are given extra urgency when his dead wife comes to life and begins to stalk the Afterlife hunting for him. Meanwhile, Lydia’s teenage daughter embarks on a romance with a local teen."

New cast members include Jenna Ortega as Lydia's daughter, Astrid, Monica Bellucci as Betelgeuse's wife, Willem Dafoe as an afterlife cop, and Justin Theroux in an undisclosed role.

Wednesday creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar penned the script.

Beetlejuice 2 is set to release in theaters on Sept. 6, 2024.

@UncleHarm1 - You've never heard of the Beetlejuice musical I take it. Also, Burton is pretty cross-generational. Every kid grows up with Burton movies.

@ObserverIO - I have not heard of that, but tally me banana I'm intrigued. I feel bad for this generation though. Burton hasn't been on his game since like the 80's

No need to tell their story again, plus you really can't have her back without Baldwin

Because she's afraid Baldwin would shoot her on the set.

@Malatrova15 - that sure looked like Catherine O’Hara in the trailer. Guessing that the unexpected tragedy is Jones’ character’s (Lydia’s father) death

Alec Baldwin actually sending people to the afterlife.

I've said this from the beginning. It's hard to do a ghost story as sequels when the ghosts don't age. I guess with demons it's different and you can make them work for the story as older. But ghosts in lore and movies don't age.
SauronthePower
SauronthePower - 4/16/2024, 8:02 AM
@SonOfAGif - they could very simply, and VERY effectively, explain it as the aging is an illusion to maintain their relationship dynamic with Lydia as parental guardians/overseers and that the aging allows for Lydia’s frail human mind to process smoothly their interactions whereas a perpetually 35ish year old appearance would not be accorded the same respect

Isn’t she retired from acting?

@mountainman - I believe so, teaching law I believe, but she kinda has a point about the acting. I doubt they wanna de age her or deal with Baldwin's recent controversy unfortunately, but I don't feel they need to either for the film to work. Probably more along those lines. The Rogue actress for X-Men is in Canadian government, but came back for the show so it could be done, but for Geena it's probably just not a thing for her at this stage.

I'm just curious how they address it because Burton established very clear rules for the afterlife. Considering we know they are at the house because the model is there, they should be there too. They have to haunt the house for 125 years. "It's all in the handbook"

I'm also curious what our in to the afterlife is, or is this movie going to completely drop that aspect and just have the juice messing with Lydia and family?

Some of the best parts of the movie are the world building and the afterlife, and I'm just curious how we get there. I'm not all that interested in following Keaton around as him because it would just be too much. It's one of the reasons the first movie works, you wait for him to pop up.
