HELLRAISER Reboot Reportedly Casts GRAND ARMY Star Odessa A’Zion As "Riley"

It's been a while since we had any news on Spyglass Media's planned "re imagining" of Clive Barker's Hellraiser, but The Illuminerdi has now shared a very interesting casting update.

20-year-old actress Odessa A'Zion (CBS series Fam and Netflix's Grand Army) has reportedly been tapped to play the lead role of "Riley." Though the project is also said to be seeking a female lead to play a gender-swapped take on Pinhead, this is believed to be a different part.

We found out late last year that the filmmaking team behind Sundance Film Festival sensation The Night House had been enlisted to tackle this new take on Barker's story. David Bruckner (V/H/S, Southbound) will direct, while Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski will pen the screenplay. The story is being mapped out by David Goyer.

Barker's 1987 adaptation of his own novella, The Hellbound Heart, introduced one of cinema's most recognizable and enduring movie monsters in Pinhead, the leader of a group of demonic beings known as Cenobites. The movie went on to achieve cult status, spawning multiple inferior sequels, a short-lived TV series, comic books, and more.

Specific details on this new version are still under wraps. but Spyglass has described it as “loyal, yet evolved.” A separate HBO series is also in the works from Halloween (2018) director David Gordon Green.

Bruckner made his directorial debut with the 2007 sci-fi horror film, The Signal, and more recently helmed a few episodes of the Creepshow TV series.

Tilda Swinton would be a good pinhead, play it a bit more other worldly, neutral, not just a copy of the original. Be ambiguous on the gender.

Could make for something different and interesting

@dracula - I dig it. If I'm not wrong, wasn't she considered for Pennywise in IT 2017?

@dracula - thats what pinhead was in the original novel. Hell he wasn't even the main cenobite, it was more so the collective speaking one by one.

@MrCamw1 - clive barker wrote 2 sequels to the hellbound heart

The scarlet gospels that came out in 2015, also pretty sure there is a prequel

@dracula - Scarlet Gospels I've heard of but I didn't know that was a sequel. I'll have to pick it up soon.

For me, the first three Hellraiser movies are easily the best of the franchise. I think that Inferno is the best movie after the first three but you can clearly see that it wasn't supposed to be a Hellraiser movie.

@MV081199 - every movie after three was not intended to be hellraiser movies. You'll notice they were all mostly procedurals and then they threw pinhead in after the fact.

Honestly, I was hoping that Clive Barker would get to do the remake he wanted to do.

Isn't Pinhead a male in the books and comics and movies? Is this another attempt at making a more 'progressive' holywood by gender swapping him?

@Tufasrox - Nope, the original Cenobite with pins in their head is said to have a feminine voice in The Hellbound Heart. The movie (directed by the novel's author) changed it in the movie.

No need to change Pinhead

“Its voice, unlike that of its companion, was light and breathy-the voice of an excited girl. Every inch of its head had been tattooed with an intricate grid, and at every intersection of horizontal and vertical axes a jeweled pin driven through to the bone. Its tongue was similarly decorated.”
