The power of Christ compels you... to give this franchise one more chance!

Recent horror revival, The Exorcist: Believer, proved to be a massive disappointment for fans of William Friedkin's original masterpiece, but it did actually end up performing pretty well at the box office, which means Universal Pictures and Blumhouse intend to forge ahead with the next instalment in the planned trilogy.

Shortly after the movie hit theaters, we learned that director David Gordon Green had decided not to helm The Exorcist: Deceiver, and the studio has now enlisted a filmmaker that's sure to reignite interest.

According to Jeff Sneider (since backed-up by Deadline), none other than Mike Flanagan is in talks to helm the next Exorcist movie. Whether it will keep the "Deceiver" subtitle is unclear, and we're not sure if the cast of Believer will return - although given the previous film's reception, there's a good chance Flanagan will decide to start from scratch with a new story/characters.

Flanagan has Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck on the way, and has previously helmed the likes of The Fall of the House of Usher Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game, Ouija: Origin of Evil, The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher.

This guy rarely misses, so fingers crossed he'll be able to get this franchise back on track.

"Exactly 50 years ago this fall, the most terrifying horror film in history landed on screens, shocking audiences around the world. Now, on Friday, October 13, a new chapter begins. From Blumhouse and director David Gordon Green, who shattered the status quo with their resurrection of the Halloween franchise, comes The Exorcist: Believer.

Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding (Tony winner and Oscar nominee Leslie Odom, Jr.; One Night in Miami, Hamilton) has raised their daughter, Angela (Lidya Jewett, Good Girls) on his own. But when Angela and her friend Katherine (newcomer Olivia Marcum), disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil."

The Exorcist: Believer also stars Ann Dowd as Victor and Angela’s neighbor, and Jennifer Nettles and Norbert Leo Butz as the parents of Katherine, Angela’s friend.

Leave it THE HELL alone!

Stop coasting on the back of a title.

Stop relying on CGI.

If using original characters treat them with respect.

Well he is a good Director/Writer, although I was a little disappointed in how he ended the movie "Dr. Sleep" since it went where the book didn't, but overall I generally enjoy his work. So if he gets this gig, I'll definitely give it a shot.

Flanagan is a much better storyteller over a long form series than he is with a 2 hour film. Not that his movies are bad or anything, but they don't tend to resonate as much as something like Hill House or Midnight Mass.

I'd be much more excited to see this if it was a six or seven episode series.

I would prefer that he just focuses on The Dark Tower, than you.

I love Flanagan’s style, but I want him to make more features vs. series. The more miniseries he’s made, the clearer it has been that he’s shoehorning multiple unrelated stories (by the same author) into a bigger narrative. This kind of lets the air out of the mystery-solving aspect of his shows. For example, a whole episode may be built around adapting a story to be a character’s backstory that has nothing to do with the main story — filler in a show that is already short. This was especially apparent in Bly Manor, Midnight Club and House of Usher.
