InstigatorGIRL's Rant & Review of Supernatural Season 5

In this article I will discuss the entire season as a whole. I will discuss my likes and dislikes. SPOILERS

I'll just start this off by saying that overall I loved this season. To me it was definately one of the best of the series. That being said, I will also add that I have complaints. I'm planning to review the season as a whole as well as go over the episodes and, of course, my likes and dislikes.

So the story starts off where the season 4 finale ended. Lucifer's cage is open and he is rising up to wreak havoc and end the world. Just as it seems that Lucifer has the Brothers cornered, they are transported out of the locked cathedral to a plane flying above(poor Dean). The Winchesters then travel to Chuck the Prophet's house seeking answers as to who saved them from Lucifer, while there they find out that Castiel was blown up by an archangel. Then Zachariah (Kurt Fuller) appears and explains that Michael is ready for his vessel, Dean, to say yes because Lucifer was circling his vessel as they spoke and Dean was needed to defeat the devil.

Then enters Nick (Mark Pellegrino), Nick becomes the temporary vessel of Lucifer when Lucifer manipulates Nick using his murdered baby and wife to have him say yes. Lucifer real vessel is revealed, later, to be Sam.

While trying to figure out how to defeat the devil, a possessed Bobby and some demons, including Meg, attack the boys. As possessed Bobby is ready to kill Dean, real Bobby gains control only to stab himself with Ruby's Knife and the result is he becomes paralyzed from the waist down. Later Zachariah tries to manipulate Dean to say yes through torture only to have Castiel, in all of his badassness, appears back from the dead to save the boys. Castiel doesn't possess all of his powers because he's cut off from Heaven.

The boys realize there is a rift between them because of Sam's choice to side with Ruby and not Dean, which resulted in the start of the Apocalypse. Dean realizes he can't trust Sam and Sam notices the major burden he carries now. After they encounter and defeat one of the Four Horsemen, War, they go their separate way for a while. During that time Lucifer and Sam talk and Sam discovers he's the "chosen one" for Lucifer.

Then Dean gets to go on a trip 5 years into the future, thanks to Zachariah, and he observes everything that will be after Sam says, "Yes" to the devil. He leads a group of rebels fighting to stop the devil while trying to survive against those infected with the Croatoan virus and Castiel is now a human, who indulges in drugs and orgys, after the angels abandon their hope in Dean and leave.

Dean sees the burden he will have in the future and he also talks to Lucifer, who is inside Sam's body. (AMAZING scene).

When Dean return to present time, the boys reunite and decide that they need each other to win this war. During the next few episodes the boy encounter the Anti-Christ, who ends up being a little boy, a Man-Witch, who ages Dean to his 70's, Cupids, Fans at a Supernatural convention, Zombies, hell hounds, gods and goddesses, more demons, teenage satanists, the remaining Horsemen (Famine, Pestilence, and Death) and, once again, The Trickster, whom you find out is really the Archangel Gabriel (He is also known as Loki).

(Am skipping the details in most of the episodes. Will explain my likes and dislikes on them later. Most of them kinda trailed away from the stroyline anyways.)

Eventually some hunters catch up with Sam and Dean and kill them. They go to heaven and Castiel tells them to find an angel named Joshua. Joshua is the angel that talks directly with God. Joshua tells them that God doesn't want to be found and that they are on their own. He had already brought Castiel back to life and he got them away from Lucifer and put them on that plane and that was all he would do, to the disappointment of the Winchesters and Castiel.

Later on, Gabriel dies at the hands of Lucifer, but he leaves Dean and Sam a porn DVD starring Gabriel himself. In the DVD he tells them there's a way to throw Lucifer back in his cage in Hell. The key is the Four Horsemen's rings. They, of course, get them with the help of a demon named Crowley (Mark Sheppard) and then devise a plan to get at Lucifer. Which they decide to have Sam say, "Yes." Which he does. Because Dean refused Michael one to many times, Michael takes Adam (Sam and Dean's half brother) as a vessel. They meet on the battlefield only to have Dean show up to interfere. Castiel and Bobby arrive and Castiel banishes Michael temporarily. Lucifer kills Castiel and Bobby for interfering and begins to beat the crap out of Dean. But, when the sun shines on the Impala, Sam starts to see all the memories he's had with Dean in the car and he gains control of himself again. He opens the gate to Hell and starts to jump in, but when Michael tries to stop him he drags Michael with him and the gate closes. Castiel comes back to life, with his angelic powers restored, and heals Dean and revives Bobby and then tells him he will return to heaven to help restore everything. Bobby (now healed and able to walk thanks to Crowley) decides to start hunting again. Dean returns to Lisa (an old flame whom he always imagined a happy life with) and he begins his new life. The final scene is Sam standing outside Lisa's house staring in.

******Likes & Dislikes******

-I love Mark Pellegrino as Lucifer. All of his scene were amazing no matter whom he was acting with. I also loved how they protrayed Lucifer. I couldn't help but like the character! All of the dialogue the devil had was just brilliant and very entertaining. Especially the scene where they showed Lucifer in the future (In Sam's body) and his talk with Dean. Gave me goosebumps. I couldn't get enough of the character, and I feel he should've been in more episodes.

-Crowley... He is definately my new favorite demon. Played brilliantly by Mark Sheppard. Crowley is yet another new character they should've brought in more throughout the season. I really hope they bring him in more in the sixth season. Who else loved the scene where he brings in his Hell Hound to fight. "I brought my own... Mine's bigger." EPIC.

-Okay this next one might surprise many, but... I really liked Paris Hilton in the show. She really delivered in her role. She was only in one episode but she really impressed me. So good job Paris.

-I didn't like how they made Dean into a Debbie Downer. I understand he had a HUGE burden to carry but still I was glad when they ended that and gave him his balls back.

-Sam/Lucifer impressed me, but then disappointed me. I loved how Jared played him the first time around in the future but then when he finally got taken over but Lucifer in the final episode he just didn't seem to have that same energy that drew me to him in the first place. I understand it's not really Jared's fault but still a disappointment.

-Okay my biggest issue is they hype up this HUGE battle for about 2 seasons and the time comes and there's no BIG BRAWL! Only talking. FAIL... This was such a let down and I must say my biggest upset for the season. I was hoping for a little bit of action before Dean interfered.

-Of course I loved Castiel and what I loved the most was when he was trying to be more human. Such as trying to understand jokes or Dean's references to pop culture. Also trying to fit in with his new comrades by taking part in drinking games, or trying to say the right thing (such as the scene where Sam asks him to take care of Dean and Bobby when he's gone and Cass says it's impossible but stops and says, "Oh, I was suppose to lie... Suuuuure they'll be fine.) My only dislike was I was really hoping he would've stayed human but I can't complain considering I was terrified they would left him dead. My favorite Castiel scene has to be when Dean finds out he's a virgin and decides to take him to a brothel to get him laid, which, of course, doesn't work out. Also when Castiel goes undercover with Dean as an FBI agent.

- Changing Channels may have steered away from the storyline but it was a genius episode and one of my all time favorites! I can't explain how much I loved this episode. It was just so fun to see them make fun of other shows like "Grey's Anatomy"

and "CSI: Miami"

among others too. The Japanese game show scene plus the Herpexia commercial were priceless.

-I really didn't like the new Meg at all. She didn't have the same energy that the original from first season did.

-It sucked they killed Gabriel off! I loved the Trickster episodes. I was so happy they gave him more of an importance in the show. I especially loved the final scene with Lucifer and him. Amazing. So here's to hoping Castiel wasn't the only one revived.

-Now many may disagree with me but I liked the ending they gave Jo and Ellen. It was a beautiful ending for them and heroic. I never really grew the charcaters but I still cried when they died. I hope they keep them dead because it would taint what was one of the best scenes in the series if they come back.

-Now I don't know if I am misunderstanding this but I believe Chuck was God. Which if he was, that was just genius and a great twist. Many argue about the amulet and it not glowing around him. Joshua clearly explains this. He said the amulet wouldn't work because God doesn't want to be found. Also if God doesn't want to be found then obviously he could hide himself from everyone and anything.

-Kurt Fuller really delivered as Zachariah. I love when they make characters you just love to hate but I was SO happy when they killed him off. Good riddance to that character! He was a little too much at most times.

-One of my other disappointments with the season was they brought in the Anti-Christ, who was a little boy, and said he had a big part to play in the Apocalypse. Then at the end of the episode he disappears and we never see him again. What the fail?? He should've been brought back in the final episodes or something to wrap that up. To me it felt like it was left open and there was no real closure there to me.

-Didn't like the Fan convention episode. That was just a lame attempt to give a nod to the fans which really came off as a little insulting. Maybe it was just me.

-The "My Bloody Valentine" episode was just disgusting. I mean it was a good episode because it brought in Famine but it was a little too gory for my taste. I actually got nauseated by the opening scene, which I'm sure they wanted, so good job. You succeeded in me loosing my appetite for the rest of the night...

-Props to Jim Beaver and the episode, "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid." Considering Jim Beavers really did lose his wife to cancer in real life, he had just the experience he needed to apply it to that episode. Jim always delivers as Bobby in every season and I look forward to his return in season 6!

-Just so everyone knows. I knew the frikin Colt wouldn't work on the devil. It kills demons and Lucifer is an angel... DUH...

-Loved the scene with Death and Dean. Loved how he tells Dean that he is one of the most powerful beings in the world and he's strapped to a boy throwing a tantrum. Great dialogue in that scene too.

-A lot of the dialogue in the season was outstanding and, like I stated before, I especially love the dialogue Lucifer had with other characters.

-One of the best use of special effects has to be when the archangel Raphael arrives and has lightning bolt angel wings. Very, very Cool.

-Honestly I am sad that they renewed Supernatural for a sixth season after watching that finale. It would've been a great ending to a great show.

-Loved they gave Sam the hero's ending. He made the ultimate sacrifice by giving his life to save his brother and the world. SirPrize is the one who really made me enjoy Sam's fate even more because I have to agree that the last few seasons they really seemed to down size Sam and up size Dean. I feel they really redeemed Sam in the final episode.

Anyways another season has ended and I must say the entire season, though it did have some flaws, was a phenomenal season. I recommend this season to anyone who hasn't caught it yet. A great story and mythology that has a great blend of action, drama, comedy, and fear. Share your thought below as usual.

P.S. For those who insist on coming in here to say they hate the show. I will delete your comments. If you don't like it then don't read and don't waste your typing skills just to share your negativity, unless you're a fan and its about something that bothered you about the season.

Bloody great review!!! I think I agree with you on all points! I really wish they had finished the show at the end of this season. If I had my way I would have kept Cas and Bobby dead. I also love that that Chuck was God, if thats what it is, I think there is a chance he might have just been taken to heaven by God though.

Think I might go and rewatch the finale again!

And my favourite part of it....

IGIRL. Great review! I think that Sam resurrection will be for the same reason that John Constantine was able to be resurrected. He intentionally gave his life to save another. IMO the only place for them to move forward in Season 6 is to go after the Antichrist which would be older. The antichrist was the only loose end from season 5.

I thought it was a great season but I was left a little disappointed since I was hoping for a hardcore fight scene between Sam/Lucifer and Dean/Michael.

I also thought that the scene between Adam/Michael and Sam/Lucifer should have been between Sam and Dean.

My favorite version of Michael was when he used Young John Winchester as a vessel.

I don't think Chuck is God. Atleast not yet.

I'm looking forward to Season 6. I hope they bring back Death.

Awesome review Instigator! You nailed it right on the head with everything!

- Mark Pellagreno was awesome!
- Castiel's lines were priceless. I nearly had a corinary when he was "offed" in the last epidose! Then I realized that it was such a pansy way out that it couldn't have been the end of him. Same with Bobby
- We needed more of Crowly
- Shame how Gabriel went out

Two more things:
1- PUDDING!!!
2- Smallville sucks.

great review! the only thing i have to disagree with you is that the ending!
the ending was a great season finale but if it was a series finale i would have hated it because it left off on a cliff hanger....

i just hate it when series end that way, i like closure dammit!

so yeah other than that great review!!1

The reason the Anti-Christ didn't show up for the Apocalypse is because the Apocalypse never happened. Dean showed up and made Sam jump in the hole! Did you miss that part? Question! Was Chuck God at the end? If it was God, was he always God? If he was always God, why didn't Dean's Amulet glow? OK that's 3 questions, but its about the same person!

One reason I thought the season finale was so packed and a bit rushed was that it was the last episode with the director Eric Kripke. Also, I totally think that Chuck isn't God. Earlier in the season, an angel told Chuck that when he finished writing, Chuck would go to heaven as a reward. I'm still holding out for the whole Chuck-as-a-prophet mainly because, the writer of Supernatural as God is total douchebag/M. Night territory. I did like your review, InstigatorGirl. It was spot-on.

InstigatorGirl - This is my first post and I have to say I am a huge Supernatural fan. I agree with most of your article and was happy to relive some moments from this past season. this season was awesome,& great review.i loved the actors that played the lesser & archangels.Though I hated that Adam was there,I would've liked it better if it was the actor that played a young John Winchester instead. As far as Chuck being God,my jaw dropped!!!I was amazed by that & it makes perfect sense.I wonder when he went back, did he unleash his wraith on the angels that jump started the end of the world

Awesome review IGIRL! :)

I have to agree with pretty much everything you say here! It's a damn shame that Mark Pellegrino wasnt in more episodes and the Lucifer vs. Michael confrontation was very anti-climatic but they're minor faults in an otherwise excellent season!

I'm sort of looking forward to what might happen with next season although I struggle to see where they go from here...I just hope it wont end up like 24 - an amazing fifth season that none since have been able to match! As much as I love Supernatural, I'd rather it end on a high point than go the way of Smallville! :P

I am a huge fan of this show, I loved the season finale, it could have used more action but it was still a very powerful ending, any true Supernatural fan would have shed at least a couple of tears watching it, I'm not ashamed to say I did. Even though another season is not necessary I still wanna see which directions the characters go and if Dean's new family will play a bigger part.

LMAO Okay how does that pic even look like me??

@SP You're right. I love it and now I want it... Also why do you gotta tease the abs thing. Now I'm gonna have to add you to my spank bank. lol

@LEEE I don't go in articles anymore to say that Smallville sucks in fact I did a review in favor of it.

@Ecksman don't bash on Smallville in my articles please. lol.

@Jimdlux The angel Joshua stated that the amulet wouldn't work because God doesn't want to be found, and if he doesn't want to be found then nothing nor anything will sense him. Hence the amulet never glowed around him. I'm not sure if Chuck was God but just a speculation among many fans. Also no I didn't miss that part, but Castiel said that Lucifer would find the Anti-Christ and use him in the fight. Which he never even looked for him after the episode.

@Sillygirl Thanks!

THANKS TO ALL THE ASSBUTTS OUT THERE FOR READING AND COMMENTING!

The reason Sam Lucifer didn't deliver is because we watched Mark Pellegrino play such a superior role throughout the season. Jared couldn't and didn't compete.

I love Trickster episodes, but I hate that he was an angel. I think they ruined the mythology of that character. And then the other gods thought he was Loki, which even made his cover worse for me. It was so unnecessary. But that guy who played Balder had such a hot accent to me.

And what the heck did the angel's need the Winchester's for? It was the car that saved the world.

Crowley was the best new character. He was fantastic.

And I think Chuck being God was lame. I just really really do. It was a twist, but disappointing to me.

I think they should have had a longer epilogue with Dean living normal and then ended the series on a high note. Please get back to basics next season: vampires, werewolves, demons and so on.

The best thing about the season is that they showed just how set up Sam was to be Lucifer's vessel. I also liked that Castiel pointed out to Dean that his life sucked because he chose to have his freedom rather than peace. That was interesting.

But I don't see how Dean saying "Yes" to Micheal was more of an insane plan then Sam saying "Yes" to Lucifer.

But I think I'm gonna be sad from now watching Supernatural because Jensen should be Captain America!!!

I'm sorry IG it was the boobs that messed up my eyesight.

As for Chuck being God that didn't even register thought he was more of an Angel, a spirit, or hell now an apostle in Heaven. I thought it was a good call for a chapter ending.

Not to mention getting Dean all beat up like that was kinda cool made you think he was done too. Then he got saved by the montage with a simple ending.

If your looking for a climax just watch porn and wait for the money shot! A happy ending for all.

I think they where going to send this off with a better ending if they didnt get renewed. Because they had some holes ,the anti christ didn't play a part so maybe they decided to extend this stroy arc after all. I mean in the future episode if im not mistaken wasn't chuck in that one 5 years later ?? unless I am incorrcet cause it's been awhile since i seen that episode.

In the Supernatural magazine the creator promised that there would be an Apocalypse and the heroes wouldn't save the day .. cause it would be a cheap way out. So i don't think this story arch is done. And Sam came back but how did he get outta hell ?? and he had powers. And the 5 year after story Satan won and killed future Dean so that didnt make sense to me.

BTW this is my favorite tv series !!!at least it trys to be great unlike heroes

Hey Igirl get review. I don't really watch much TV but me and my friends go out of our way to catch every episode of this. That being said, wasn't necessarily my favorite season I'd have to put it somewhere in the middle. If I were to rank the seasons it would probably go Season 2, Season 1, Season 5, Season 4, Season 3. Don't get me wrong I love every season of this show and some of the best characters were introduced seasons 4 and 5 -ahem- Cas, but the first two seasons just had a different energy about them that cause me to fall in love with the show in the first place. It was probably cause of the close brotherly bond, without looming danger or distrust between the brothers. Also I refuse to believe Gabriel is dead. I he'd have to be a little more creative to attack Luci the way he did. Nah he's definitely alive, he gave Luci his two cents and gave the brothers what they needed. For the record I feel that the Anti-Chirst is now the ultimate plot device to undo a bad season LoL. I mean they made him out to be a god, and like the Godly kind of god not the stupid kind of gods. I honestly didn't see any way they could have used him without him just simply ending the apocalypse. I also liked the Ellen and Jo death scene, it was a very moving episode even though they made it painfully obvious that it was going to happen the whole time. BTW you missed the return of one of my favorite hunters, Rufus! He's like a more pissed off JDM. Well maybe that's going a too far but he was still pretty cool once in action in the episode with War. I actually liked the episode with Famine. You caught a glimpse of both Sam's darkest side and a strength buried beneath the darkness. To be able to tell Famine no when he's aching for more demon blood (especially when he see how he gets when he's addicted to the stuff) that's real strength of character. I was kinda pissed off when the reason Dean didn't hunger for anything was because "he's dead inside" I would of taken the "well-fed" excuse better than that. Top three favorite demons changed season from Yellow-Eyes, Alastair, and Meg to Crowley, Yellow-Eyes, Alastair. Crowley was all sorts of awesome, I feel that he is what Ruby should of been. BTW I was laughing by ass off when Bobby was like "Why'd you take a picture?" "Why did you use tongue?" He's devilishly sneaky yet straightforward which is a winning combination in a demon. I love this guy. Death was another awesome character. He just has that I don't give a damn attitude and honestly why should he? I honestly think he's the only character in the entire show who's able to make Dean feel so little and actually scare him. It was one of the very few times Dean's defense doesn't hold up. Death accomplished what most others couldn't with ease. The exchange they had was so great.

Overall the season was incredible but there were times I thought it was gonna be the ultimate let down. Namely when the season picked up after the break. Dean became, as you so eloquently dubbed, a debbie downer. And every episode was after the break was about his attitude not changing. There were times I'd be yelling at the screen for Dean to just suck it up and move on. I honestly could not stand it. Then eventually the episodes started picking up around "My Bloody Valentine," I felt the episode that renewed my faith in the show was "Dark Side of the Moon". Dean still had his bad attitude but it worked for the episode cause there was so much else going on (with Zac and the Return of Ash and Pam, well kinda). I just loved that episode. Anyways yeah this was a great season, and this was a great article. I was fun to read and rant about ^_^

EDIT: Wow... I didn't think my comment would be this long LoL
InstigatorGIRL
InstigatorGIRL - 5/18/2010, 5:45 PM
@Reilly Now that I think about it I left out another awesome scene which was Castiel beating the crap out of Dean. Dean was provoking Castiel throughout the entire episode and then Castiel reaches his limit and we actually see him tap into some pent up anger he has and unleashes it on Dean when he goes to surrender to Michael.
And who could forget what Castiel tells him when beating him down, "I gave up EVERYTHING for you two! And this is what I get in return?? You just give up and give in!" Definatley a true meaning of knocking some sense into Dean. Another favorite Castiel scene.
ReillyParker
ReillyParker - 5/18/2010, 6:02 PM
@Igirl: Yeah I remember that. I f*cking love Cas. This whole season with him trying to integrate with humans and then getting frustrated with God, then become completely human. The thing I love about Cas is how every word that comes out of his mouth is what literally comes to his mind at the moment and how he puts in it in such a matter-of-fact tone "How'd you get here?" "I took a bus." Even after losing his powers he still kept on coming taking on ridiculous odds. He went toe-to-toe with his old boss. He escaped the holy oil trap (by walking on a burning demon). He took on multiple angels at once and killed/beat them. He even molotov'd Michael, which was the most badass Cas scene out of them all (well maybe not better than the scene with the sigil carved into himself). I'm glad he knocked some sense into Dean, Dean truly deserved that ass-kicking.

Something else I wanted to add; I wasn't disappointed in this Meg. I just think they didn't use her enough, or how they didn't make much use of demons at all this season, other than Crowley. It was more of Angels VS. Lucifer VS. Winchesters. The demons were just there. As for Meg, her role was like minuscule which sucked cause I was all hyped up from the first episode of the season hoping to see more from her. It was pretty misleading. I also find it funny that even with all this going down Meg is STILL around. I have a feeling she's definitely coming back season 6.
