IT Prequel WELCOME TO DERRY Adds A Director And Showrunners As HBO Max Spin-Off Starts Taking Shape

Variety (via FearHQ.com) has revealed that Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane are set to serve as co-showrunners on the IT prequel series that's currently in the works at HBO Max.

IT and IT: Chapter Two director Andy Muschietti is developing the project alongside his wife and producing partner, Barbara. Now, though, it's been confirmed that the former is being eyed to direct the series premiere (likely making the show his first project after next summer's The Flash movie).

Plot details for Welcome to Derry remain under wraps, though we do know it will definitely take place prior to the events of both movies. Author Stephen King only wrote one IT novel, and has also only ever really teased the demonic being's history with Derry. With that in mind, this show is clearly going to be an original story.

Fuchs was tapped to write the teleplay for the first episode of the series, based on a story he penned with the Muschiettis. He was a co-producer on IT: Chapter Two, and other credits include Wonder Woman and Ice Age: Continental Drift

As for Kane, his recent writing credits include the likes of Moonhaven, Warrior, and Fringe

The IT movies strongly hinted that Pennywise had a history in Derry, and we're assuming that's what this spin-off would explore. It's impossible to imagine the killer clown not being part of proceedings as he's obviously the biggest draw when it comes to the horror franchise. Of course, that leaves us to wonder whether Bill Skarsgard will reprise the role.

He's busy with a number of projects, but very much made Pennywise his own in the 2017 and 2019 movies. However, if the demonic monster is required to be a big part of Welcome to Derry, there's a strong chance a new actor will be enlisted. Some fans may not be happy about that, but it will be exciting to see what another actor can bring to the table.

It's clearly early days for this one, but we'll hopefully see the project take shape quite rapidly now it has two showrunners.

I enjoyed both movies so definitely interested in this, hopefully it goes in an interesting direction, as much as a prequel can.

Mike Flanagan, wants to do Dark Tower, as his dream project, hopefully he gets to do that and we get more Stephen King Adaptions

@SimplyAz - After watching Midnight Mass, I trust Mike Flanagan to do absolutely anything he wants. That series is a masterpiece.

@Toecutter -

I loved Midnight Mass so much, just amazing.

So were Haunting On Hill House and Bly Manor.

Keeps getting it right

@SimplyAz - It has been in Derry for like thousands of years. So I think it makes sense to do something like an anthology series about a lot of the past occurrences they talk about in the movie. Like when they are looking through old photos of Derry and the Clown can be seen in them. Some can be 1 episode, some can be 2 or 3 episodes long.

Or, they could maybe take the American Horror Story approach and make each season a different point in time of Derry's past. I think that probably makes more sense.

Either way, I'm glad to hear that hear that Muschietti os developing this series. He had a good eye for the story and treated it as well as I think he could have. But if Skaarsgard doesn't play Pennywise then they need to be extremely picky of who they cast for the role, because that could really kill this show on its own. Skaarsgard was soo damn good as Pennywise and if someone else plays him I feel like they won't be able to capture his creepiness as well.

@CorndogBurglar -

That sounds good
There's a lot to play with. Could even have IT as a nefarious character in the background whose influence you can always feel.

Hopefully we get more info soon

@SimplyAz - Yeah, that could be cool too. Like the main story is about people I'm the town doing evil things that seem out of character. And the viewer always knows that It is in background. Maybe even hide him in the background of scenes, like he is in the old photos in the movies. It could be a cool thing for the viewers to try and spot him throughout the series.

I like that.

The premise definitely has potential, but of course way too early to tell how it will pan out. The wife and I enjoyed both films, so will at least start to watch and give it a chance whenever it premieres.

This is exciting. I've wanted to see an IT prequel for a while so hopefully this serves.
As for Skarsgards involvement, I hope they managed to get him signed on but with Pennywise being a shape shifter I guess they could say Pennywise developed Skarsgards PW personality over time.

Remember the hype the first movie brought? People dressing up as clowns all over the place just to market the movie lol. Not to mention, it's the highest grossing horror movie ever.

@KWilly - Yeah, but people dressing up as clowns wasn't just a marketing push for the movie. That was definitely happening too, but there were random people dressing up as clowns and doing creepy ass stuff for a while there.
