Netflix is developing an adaptation of J.A. White's horror-fantasy children’s story Night Books, and the project now has a director and principal cast on board.

David Yarovesky (Brightburn, The Hive) will helm the movie, while Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones, Breaking Bad), Winslow Fegley (Larry), and Lidya Jewett (Good Girls, Hidden Figures) will star. Ritter is set to play an evil witch who imprisons a young boy named Alex (Fegley) in her New York apartment. There, Alex meets Yasmin (Jewett), who tells him that he must tell a new scary story every night in order to stay alive.

Night Books will be produced by Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert through Ghost House Pictures along with MXN Entertainment’s Mason Novick and Michelle Knudsen. The script is being written by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis (Five Feet Apart, The Curse of La Llorona).

Yarovesky left his calling card with mind-bending sci-fi thriller The Hive back in 2014, before unleashing dark "superhero" horror Brightburn on the world in 2019. Despite mixed reviews, a sequel to Brightburn is said to have been on the table before the movie took in a disappointing $32.8 million at the global box office.

I didn't hate Brightburn, but there was so much missed potential. It was the same with New Mutants. There is a way to provide good horror at a PG-13 level without the gore. The Ring, Insidious... Great movies with good stories with plenty of jumps without the gore. Althought don't get me wrong, gore can make for a great movie - Saw... But I am personally not a fan of Gore for Gore sakes either. That doesn't scare me, just bums me out...
